Russian drone 'hit over Georgia'

The Georgian military has shot down a Russian reconnaissance drone that was flying over Georgian territory, Georgia's government says.

The drone was downed near the town of Gori, south of the de facto border with breakaway South Ossetia, the interior ministry says.

Russia made no comment on the claim, and Georgia provided no evidence.

Russia recognised the independence of South Ossetia after a short war broke out over the territory last month.

edit to add Reuters link :

The drone was brought down on Monday morning near the town of Gori, some 30 km (20 miles) from the de facto border with South Ossetia, said Georgian Interior Ministry spokesman Shota Utiashvili.

"It was flying over the territory between the villages of Khurvaleti and Tsitelutani," he said. "We believe it was patrolling the territory where the Baku-Supsa (oil) pipeline runs."

Utiashvili said it was a short-range drone, and suggested it had been launched from Russian positions holding a 'security zone' just a few kilometres (miles) north of Gori.

2. Maybe -
given that most information that comes from the Georgian administration turns out to be lies. Apart from that appears to have been a reconnaissance drone.

4. Did they check the license and registration?
Could have been one of Chenney´s drones looking for a safe place to die.

5. Or it might have been
Russians flying on of our drones. Remember that the Russians said that when they captured those HumVs they were filled with top secret encrypted GPS control hardware. Maybe they were just playing with their new toys.
