Group of Veterans Call for Bush Impeachment
Source: NBC4

WASHINGTON -- Five members of a veterans group calling for the impeachment of President George W. Bush planned to occupy a ledge at the front of the National Archives Tuesday.

The five members of Veterans For Peace, who are veterans of Vietnam and Iraq, planned to scale a 9-foot retaining fence and occupy a 35-foot high ledge, where they intend to fast for 24 hours.

The group planned to raise a banner reading, "Defend our Constitution. Arrest Bush and Cheney: War Criminals!"

Anti-war veterans unfurl 'Arrest Bush/Cheney' banner at National Archives

At 7:30 a.m. this morning, they climbed a nine-foot fence to occupy a 35-foot-high ledge at the National Archives.

And five members of the Veterans for Peace organization have been there ever since. They say they're veterans of Vietnam and Iraq, anti-war activists, and soldiers for a cause who plan to fast for 24 hours in protest of the Bush administration.

Seeking the criminal prosecution of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, the organization distributed "Citizens' Arrest Warrants" to tourists waiting in line to enter the archives, which houses the key documents of U.S. history: the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

In a press release, the group described the reasons for its protest:

12. Wow, that's cool that the LA Times actually covered it!
I wonder if it made the real newspaper or was this just for the online edition?

Thanks for posting that piece!

7. Veterans for Peace have been advocating this for several years.
It's the big media that has been late in reporting it.

SEPTEMBER 23, 2008
FIVE VFP MEMBERS OCCUPY NATIONAL ARCHIVES BUILDING
On Tuesday morning, September 23, 7:30am, at the front of the National Archives Building on Constitution Ave. in Washington, D.C., five military veterans will risk arrest as they climb a 9-foot retaining fence and occupy a 35-foot high ledge to raise a 22x8 foot banner stating, "DEFEND OUR CONSTITUTION. ARREST BUSH AND CHENEY: WAR CRIMINALS!"

They seem to have photos from my chapter in their banner again -- nice!

The inside of the bus pic is either the Impeachment Bus or the White Rose, that we helped to sponsor for aid to victims of Hurricane Katrina. I'm the short woman in the pic on the far right; the tall guy next to me is a Korean War vet, and the woman with the khaki shirt was a freelance journalist in Vietnam war. I'm not a vet; I'm an associate member.

Here's an update:

2:20 PM UPDATE: Spoke to VFP, Tarak Kauff, who is representing the group on the ground outside the Archives Building. He said the group is in "great spirits." They have a sound system and have been playing recordings of MLK Jr., Rep. Dennis Kucinich, and Vincent Bugliosi. Kauff reports that the City Police have been handling the situation very well. Would like them to come down, but are respecting their First Amendment Rights. One officer told them they could "stay up there all month if they wanted." The National Archives security are not as supportive as they see it as a security breach, but are not currently taking action. No indication if the group members will be arrested on their descent. It does not, however, look like they will be forced down. Kauff said they have lights so that it will all be lit up as night falls. The media has been showing a lot of interest. NBC news was just there filming. They are receiving calls from media outlets and radio shows all over the country. Stay tuned - Cheryl Biren-Wright
