New York TimesDespite Representative Vito J. Fossella’s repeated insistence that he will not run for re-election, Republican leaders on Staten Island are looking frantically for ways to get the congressman’s name back on the ballot in November.
They have been increasing pressure on former Assemblyman Robert A. Straniere, who won the Republican primary this month, to withdraw from the race for the Congressional seat so that they can substitute Mr. Fossella’s name for his.
Such a maneuver, if the Republicans were to pull it off, would mark an extraordinary turn of events for Mr. Fossella, who announced in May that he would not seek re-election after being arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated in Alexandria, Va., and acknowledging that he had fathered a daughter in an extramarital affair.
“We are making some last-ditch efforts to try to convince Vito Fossella to run and to create opportunities for him to run,” said Guy V. Molinari, a former Staten Island borough president and a mentor to many local Republicans, including Mr. Fossella.
