Gore urges civil disobedience to stop coal plants
Wed Sep 24, 2008 3:28pm EDT
By Michelle Nichols

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Nobel Peace Prize winner and environmental crusader Al Gore urged young people on Wednesday to engage in civil disobedience to stop the construction of coal plants without the ability to store carbon.

The former U.S. vice president, whose climate change documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" won an Academy Award, told a philanthropic meeting in New York City that "the world has lost ground to the climate crisis."

"If you're a young person looking at the future of this planet and looking at what is being done right now, and not done, I believe we have reached the stage where it is time for civil disobedience to prevent the construction of new coal plants that do not have carbon capture and sequestration," Gore told the Clinton Global Initiative gathering to loud applause.

"I believe for a carbon company to spend money convincing the stock-buying public that the risk from the global climate crisis is not that great represents a form of stock fraud because they are misrepresenting a material fact," he said. "I hope these state attorney generals around the country will take some action on that."

Such actions rarely have an effect, though.

23. Blacks have the right to vote, women have the right to vote, workers have rights,
and India is now independent, because of "such actions."

"Rarely have an effect"? True, but when they DO have an effect--when an idea's time has come, and after all the "little" protests have built sufficient momentum--the effect is earth-shaking. Paradigms are overthrown. And then the idea--that took years, decades, sometimes centuries of activism and protest, to reach fruition--gets taken for granted, becomes part of the common wisdom, and people like you then say, "Don't bother. Such actions rarely have an effect"--because you apparently don't know the history of "such actions."

The Billionaires for Coal carried signs reading “More Profit, Less Mountains” and sipped on dirty (coal) martinis to applaud BoA for its funding of mountaintop removal coal mining as well as the new generation of dirty coal plants. 12. Sourcewatch: Nonviolent direct actions against coal
http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Nonviolent_direct_actions_against_coal

Around the world, nonviolent direct action—a term which, in contemporary social movements, is usually used to refer to acts of civil disobedience, in which activists blockade or occupy public or private space—has become an increasingly common tactic of anti-coal climate activists since 2004. Direct action protests have occurred in Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States (California, Florida, Maryland, Ohio, Oregon, Massachusetts, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and elsewhere). Targets have included American Electric Power, AMP-Ohio, Bank of America, BHP Billiton, Citibank, E.ON, Dominion Power, Duke Energy, Edelman Public Relations, Fortune Minerals, Massey Energy, Merrill Lynch, Miller Argent, Mirant, National Coal Corporation, Sithe Global Power, and Solid Energy.

I love the idea of civil disobedience. But Machiavelli always topped thoreau - all the gov has to do is gun down the people who sit down at protests once, and it's all over.

And as Machiavelli said, they will remember taking their land far longer than the killing of people in the family. Don't take their land and their fine.

22. Recommend many diverse protests, acts of civil disobedience, at local sites
across the country. Carbon is one big issue. Other environmental and energy issues. Outsourcing corporations. Elements of the military-energy-industrial complex with BFEE connections. ... Dirty and Martial Law establishments. ... whatever. Community organizing and demonstrations. Rather than attempting to organize large national events, which the corporate media will not justly represent on its propaganda screens anyway, scores or hundreds of local "events" scattered across the country could be orchestrated locally, and local and independent media can make the record and ensure it is disseminated through the nets. Never underestimate the power of Samizdat and the Underg.round Press.
