Obama and McCain Issue Joint Statement on the Economy
By Jeff Zeleny

The presidential candidates tonight released a joint statement as they prepared to interrupt their schedules for a series of meetings on Capitol Hill and with White House officials.

The statement from Senators Barack Obama and John McCain reads:

The American people are facing a moment of economic crisis. No matter how this began, we all have a responsibility to work through it and restore confidence in our economy. The jobs, savings, and prosperity of the American people are at stake.

Now is a time to come together – Democrats and Republicans – in a spirit of cooperation for the sake of the American people. The plan that has been submitted to Congress by the Bush Administration is flawed, but the effort to protect the American economy must not fail.

This is a time to rise above politics for the good of the country. We cannot risk an economic catastrophe. Now is our chance to come together to prove that Washington is once again capable of leading this country. . .

2. If Congress wants to help the US economy, then...
Edited on Wed Sep-24-08 08:51 PM by Eric J in MN
...they should ignore Bush, go home, and listen to the economic proposals of the next president in January.

If they pass a bill which greatly expands the national debt by giving money to investment banks for their bad investments, then they will be hurting the US economy.

Obama and McCain debate, however I think Obama being given all of McCains air time will be just fine with me, Obama then can push his approval up to 60%...........

5. but what if it does?
"...but the effort to protect the American economy must not fail."

....everyone speaks with absolute certainty that doing nothing will cause an economic collapse....yet no one can guarantee spending over a trillion dollars (probably more) will buy us a good economy....

....I look at the overall timing, I look at bushco's history, I look at the necessity of 'rapid action', I look at the track record of congress, and I smell a con....
