McCain bails on David Letterman, and the host is not happy
Source: LA Times

Hours after John McCain announced he was suspending his campaign to focus on fixing the nation's ailing economy, he pulled out of his scheduled appearance on the "The Late Show with David Letterman."

As our colleague Matea Gold reports on the Show Tracker blog, Letterman told the audience during the taping of Wednesday's show that McCain had called him personally to apologize for bailing. According to Letterman, McCain said he couldn't appear because he was rushing to the airport to get back to Washington.

But midway through the broadcast, Letterman appeared to learn that the Arizona senator was actually still in New York. In fact, McCain was just a few blocks away, at the CBS News headquarters. He was preparing for a last-minute exclusive interview with Katie Couric.

Incredulous, Letterman interrupted his interview with Keith Olbermann (who had filled in as a substitute guest for McCain) to show the audience a live shot on the internal CBS News feed of a makeup artist putting the finishing touches on McCain while he waited to talk to Couric. ...

1. Caught in another lie
In the grand scheme of things, bailing on a talk-show interview is a venal sin, but I'm glad he got busted for lying once again. When all his recent lies are taken into account, it appears that McAnus is incapable of telling the truth.

12. Why do republicons never try telling the truth?
The truth works for Americans. Why does it not work for republicons?

2. "host is not happy"... That may be the understatement of the campaign.

3. Bailing out America's Mortgage Gamblers? $700Gigabucks. Running an election? $55M/Mo. Fucking with
Dave Letterman and getting caught on a live feed being made up for a Couric interview you're doing instead of keeping your promise to be on Dave's show? Valueless.

McCain is an idiot. The Dems already had it in the bag before he arrived in Washington on the plane.

4. The video for this is at crooksandliars.com...
... and David is just brutal to McCain. He's supposed to be "racing to the airport" to go back to Washington, but, instead, he's doing another interview at CBS with Katie.

"This is not the John McCain I know."

Well, it stems, no doubt, from having been a prisoner of war for 5 1/2 years in Vietnam, I'm sure.

5. Dave may not be happy, but I am
This is so great. Yet another lie... on video... and it's funny, so the rest of the MSM will play that clip and McCain will be so busted... and I just bet that Dave is going to make this a running joke all the way to the election.

9. Try "fucking pissed off."
I thought Keith did a great job as a fill-in guest (a deliberate "fuck-you" to McCain if there ever was one), but Letterman alone would have been enough.

16. Yeah 3/4 of the show was Dave *clowning* McCain for bailing and "suspending" campaign
Priceless.

OMG, Dave Letterman tore McCain a new one.

13. Letterman: "I've got a question for him, Katie: Do you need a ride to the airport?"
Yeah, I can see he'd be pissed off. He got bumped because McCain's camp wanted some extra publicity. It makes McCain look like Larry Sanders. A two-faced egomaniac.

15. Who the hell is running his campaign? I don't want to see him win,
so all this crazy stuff makes me laugh, but REALLY, how can any politically savy consultants make so many mistakes in such a short time?

I asked my husband that this morning and he said "Maybe it's not his advisors, but it's HIM!"

It's bad enough he bailed, but then he lied about the reason - and the dolt got caught! What a fucking moron!

18. More people get their news from Letterman than Couric
Is anyone even watching Katie Couric anymore? I didn't even know she was still on the air.
Between the Comedy Central shows and the late night talk shows taking over the news distribution, evening news shows are a thing of the past.

20. The talk shows like Letterman and Leno give candidates a huge audience
and the opportunity to "humanize" themselves, let voters "get to know them" on a somewhat more personal level. In other words, they do matter. Who can forget the Big Dog's appearance playing the saxophone on Arsenio's show?

Bottom line, I would imagine that hell will freeze over before Letterman gives McLame another shot at free publicity on his show. Bad move, Johnny Boy.

22. That's it...I'm staying up later
I'm going to be watching Letterman instead of sleeping from now on. Seriously, who the fuck said, "Hey, I've got a great idea: let's fuck over Dave!" Letterman gave McSame exactly what he deserved (that would get past the censors, at least), and I'm sure it'll be a cold day in Cairo before Letterman invites anyone from that campaign on again.

Also, Olberman has invented a new emotion, where one has never been so happy to be put in such a socially uncomfortable position. Had it been anyone but KO, they would have been highly embarrassed for McCain.
