Wife 'knew slave lived in garage'

THE wife of a man accused of keeping a woman as a slave in his garage knew what was going on, a County Court trial heard yesterday.

Prosecutor Peter Faris, QC, told a Ballarat jury Graeme Slattery's wife, Julie, and their children saw him hose the woman down in their Warrnambool back yard.

Mr Faris, in his opening address to the jury, said the garage where the woman lived had no wash basin, toilet or heating.

He said Mr Slattery hosed her down with cold water while she was naked in the back yard every three or four days, even in freezing conditions.

She had only two sets of clothes, and washed the dirty set by hand while she was being hosed down.

3. Sounds like the "Perfect Victim" case

I'm not familiar with the particulars of this case, hence can't comment knowledgeably on it, but it's very reminiscent of the "Perfect Victim" case in which a man in the U.S. Northwest kept a woman as a sex slave for seven years with the full knowledge of his wife -- she even helped kidnap the victim.

The wife, however, was almost as much a victim as the sex slave in the Perfect Victim case. He tortured his wife for years, breaking her mind and spirit quite deliberately. He did the same to his sex slave, with his wife's "assistance" though it's arguable that after what he put her through, she had little or no will of her own. The guy was a total psychopath. It took them several years to "grow out of what he'd done to them, and that's when he finally got nailed.

So the wife might not really be in cahoots with the husband in this case. Or she might. Without more data, it's impossible to tell.

There are a lot of people who like to do this kind of stuff as part of recreational sex or their lifestyles, but psychopaths never seem to notice or care that the matter of consent is important.

What made me sickest of all, was that a friend of the perpetrator’s had seen this woman <snip>, forced to beat her head into brick walls, and sexually humiliated. He did not intervene, he said, because it was ‘his (Slattery’s) business what he did with her’. He added that he thought she was ‘crazy for putting up with it’

I am not "free" to walk down the street alone after a certain hour. Even in broad daylight, walking past (not even through) but past the park, I do not feel free if I am alone.

I do not feel free if my car breaks down once the sun has set.

I do not feel free as I hunt for my car in a dark parking lot. Or walk down the street, quickening my pace because I don't know whose footsteps I am hearing behind me.

And Lord only knows that the young Asians in the massage parlors of California do not feel very "free" as they service their customers.

And I live in a reasonably "safe" city by US standards :shrug: Was I too spoiled in Berlin? Riding my bike through the forests alone and not being scared? THAT was freedom.

I would want the men of America to know the fear that curses through a woman's veins knowing that anyone, almost anywhere, can just grab you and have his way. At the most, if he is unlucky, he may get a little prison time. Maybe I would feel freer in a country where Islamic law madates the castration for rapists and men think twice about it?

Uh for those poor women and children you mentioned. Not a week goes by in without reading about some place or home having been raided and young girls "liberated" from the sexual slavery they were confined to. Last month, we had the scandal of young Asian girls in a massage parlor living behind the paneling in a really cramped space & only being let out during "business hours". What kind of freedom is that?

in many parts of Africa by people of all religions.

13. Six million is a consolidated number

It accounts for the total number of European Jews killed during the Holocaust regardless of national origin. That number does not include the countless gentile political prisoners that the Nazis murdered in the death camps.

So to correct your point, it was six million Jews murdered in Europe by the Nazis in less than a decade (perhaps closer to five or six years). The Germans were the organizers and the executioners, but the Jews were not exclusively German, nor were they all killed in Germany.

No defense of the the above bigots statement, just a clarification, history-wise. Any way you look at it, six million is a staggering number.

I knew a woman in a similar situation some years back. Here in America. She got baths 2 or 3 times a year.
The man who held her prisoner was never prosecuted, to my knowledge.

I see in the linked article "The trial's jury was discharged yesterday after Judge Graeme Crossley said they had to be because something was said during the prosecution opening that was not permitted by law."
