In CBS Interview, Palin Cites 'Victory' in Iraq
Source: Washington Post

Sarah Palin, describing the need for more troops in Afghanistan, said the United States has achieved "victory" in Iraq.

In an interview with CBS's Katie Couric, the second part of which airs tonight, the Alaska governor pointed to logistical problems in battling the Taliban: "Things like the terrain even in Afghanistan and that border between Pakistan and Afghanistan, where, you know, we believe that -- Bin Laden is -- is hiding out right now and . . . and is still such a leader of this terrorist movement. There . . . there are many more challenges there. So, again, I believe that . . . a surge in Afghanistan also will lead us to victory there as it has proven to have done in Iraq. And as I say, Katie, that we cannot afford to retreat, to withdraw in Iraq."

The vice presidential nominee might have misspoken in an attempt to say that President Bush's military surge in Iraq has been a success, but she did not qualify her remarks.

Even a withdrawal from Iraq, as Democratic nominee Barack Obama proposes, is "not gonna get us any better off in Afghanistan either," Palin said. "And as our leaders are telling us in our military, we do need to ramp it up in Afghanistan, counting on our friends and allies to assist with us there because these terrorists who hate America, they hate what we stand for with the . . . the freedoms, the democracy, the . . . the women's rights, the tolerance, they hate what it is that we represent and our allies, too, and our friends, what they represent."

18. Palin is a fraud, pretending that she is knowledgable regarding
world affairs. Those Republicans who are still in control of their facilties must be experiencing most excruciating gut twisting pain.

4. wait a second...
If she thinks we've had a "victory," then why does she still say that bringing troops back home is a bad idea? Isn't that really the only idea left after a victory? Or am I not understanding the concept of victory? Maybe in Republican-speak, victory means loss, oppression is freedom, ignorance is power? Yeah, that sounds about right.

13. Sun Tzu says . . .
when you win a war, STOP FIGHTING!

OK, I phrased it like a joke, but battles and wars have been lost because bloodthirsty people wanted to keep fighting after a victory. Not that we've actually won in Iraq. Bush has claimed victory now, something like 5 times. And still we keep fighting. Maybe, just maybe, we didn't win the war any of those times.

9. and she's a journalism major
What a fine education she received. And to think I had been critical of W's way with words-who would have thought he'd look like a great public speaker!
I really do not think she has a clue what she is talking about. And that is what is so scary...

10. In interview, Palin defends Alaska-Russia remark
NEW YORK — Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin defended her remark that the close proximity of Russia to her home state of Alaska gives her foreign policy experience, explaining in a CBS interview airing Thursday that "we have trade missions back and forth."

~snip~

Palin's foreign policy experience came up when she gave her first major interview, on Sept. 11 to ABC News. Asked what insight she had gained from living so close to Russia, she said: "They're our next-door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska."

~snip~

In the interview with CBS News anchor Katie Couric, Palin said: "It's funny that a comment like that was, kind of made to ... I don't know, you know? Reporters ..."

Couric said, "Mock?"

"Yeah," Palin said, "mocked, I guess that's the word, yeah."

When Couric asked how Alaska's closeness to Russia enhanced her foreign policy experience, Palin said, "Well, it certainly does because our ... our next-door neighbors are foreign countries." Alaska shares a border with Canada.

Palin didn't answer directly when Couric inquired about whether she had been involved in any negotiations with the Russians.

"We have trade missions back and forth," she replied. As she continued, Palin brought up Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

12. Victory? That means every terrorist is dead? What does she mean how does she define
Edited on Thu Sep-25-08 03:00 PM by GreenTea
what victory is? Bush said the war was over "Mission Accomplished" after two weeks, six years ago, so we've been occupying Iraq since then, (almost six years) draining hundreds of billions of our tax dollars, going to dozens of huge republican corporations & CEOs....wars for profit!

Where's our tax money for health insurance for all, our roads & infrastructure, for Social Security and protecting our environment from corporate polluters, for our educational system, for veterans, for the poor & old, where is all the money going in Iraq for nealy six years of occupation if the war has been over since "Mission Accomplished"?

19. So.. this is the kind of victory in Iraq
that continues to cost $10 - $12 BILLION A WEEK? The kind of victory where most of the population still don't have access to clean water and regular electricity? Where child malnutrion rates are almost as bad as under Saddam?

23. Child malnutrition ratres are far worse now than they were under Hussein. Women are far worse off
now than they were under Hussein.

More clean water, more food, more jobs, more education, more freedoms under Hussein than now.

George W. bUsh has made Iraq worse in every way possible.
