Eye on the [CA] convention

Thousands of California Democrats will go to schools, libraries, churches and community centers on Sunday afternoon with one goal in mind: getting a ticket to spend a hot summer week at the party's national convention in Boston.

All across the state, convention delegates will be selected at mini caucuses run by the candidates still hoping for a chance to run against President George W. Bush this fall.

Up for grabs are 241 of California's 440 delegate votes and 40 alternates. Those delegates will represent congressional districts and be pledged to specific candidates.

Aitken says he'll be disappointed if California becomes nothing more than a victory lap for Kerry. And not because he doesn't believe Kerry can beat the incumbent president. (Bush's California campaign chairman, Gerry Parksy, will select the GOP delegates with help from party leaders.) "What bothers me is that we may have a nominee before that nominee gets battle tested in these major states like New York and California and Texas," Aitken said. California shares Super Tuesday with nine other states.
