Over the years he has cultivated an image as a no-hold-barred maverick, a hawk who is a staunch defender of national security and an eminently quotable politician whose rhetoric has on occasion alarmed friend and foe alike.

But it also aptly describes his opponent in next month's Republican primary, former South Bay Rep. Bob Dornan, who has hosted a syndicated talk radio show since his forced 1998 political retirement, when he lost to Rep. Loretta Sanchez in the 47th District.

By Dornan's own admission, he's running a one-issue campaign targeting Rohrabacher's foreign policy stance and what he contends are highly suspicious campaign contributions from Muslim groups.

He cites Rohrabacher's financial ties to Abdurahman Alamoudi, former president of the American Muslim Foundation, who was arrested last year on suspicion of money laundering for Libya and whom CNN has reported worked with the nephew of Osama bin Laden.
