U.S. Copter Crew Kills Iraqi Insurgent
TIKRIT, Iraq - A U.S. Army helicopter crew killd one insurgent and wounded another during a rocket attack against an Army base north of Baghdad, the U.S. military said Saturday.

The two pilots of the OH-58D "Kiowa Warrior" helicopter from the 4th Infantry division's, 10th Cavalry Regiment saw smoke trails from two rockets leading toward Logistical Support Area Anaconda near Balad, 65 miles north of Baghdad on Friday.

The crew saw an insurgent who tried to evade the helicopter as it approached. The pilots fired on the attacker, killing him, the military said in a statement.

A patrol sent to the site discovered the body of the first attacker and found another wounded insurgent hiding in the bushes, the statement added. The soldiers also found three rocket tubes with an 80mm rocket still inside one of them.

A timed detonation device made of a clock and batteries was attached to the rocket, the statement added.

Police major in attack on US troops
From correspondents in Baghdad
February 9, 2004

US troops have killed an Iraqi man, wounded two others and arrested 41 suspects in operations to crack down on insurgency in the restive Sunni Muslim area north of Baghdad, the US army said today.

One man was killed and two others wounded after they attacked US soldiers who returned fire, near Qadessiya, a village in the area of Tikrit, former dictator Saddam Hussein's home town.

"The attacker who was killed was identified later as an active Iraqi Police major," said a statement from the Fourth Infantry Division.

The US-led coalition recently voiced concern over the issue of attacks involving the police, a force inherited largely unchanged from Saddam's regime.

2. That's a very, very bad sign
The insurgency, as predicted, has infiltrated the police forces. And, presumably, the ICDC.
