McCain to appear on 'Saturday Night Live'
Source: The Associated Press

John McCain is set to appear on NBC's "Saturday Night Live" just three days before the presidential election.

Aides say the Republican presidential candidate will make a detour from battleground states to the late-night weekend show that has been a must-watch for many during the political season.

Earlier this month, McCain running mate Sarah Palin and her impersonator, Tina Fey, earned "Saturday Night Live" its best ratings in 14 years. Palin's guest shot had been widely anticipated since Fey began imitating her a month ago.

1. Appearing on comedy shows...attacking everyone else... that's all they got.
And gee, I guess if that's all ya got, that's all ya can do.

7. when your campaign is one big joke
May as well embrace that reality and go for it. At this point he should just have fun. Take a few shots at Sarah, whoop it up on SNL, go out with a smile instead of a scowl.

20. Hurricane Ike happened to Obama's appearance
ABC's Sunlen Miller and Matt Jaffe Report: Senator Obama has postponed his upcoming 'Saturday Night Live' appearance due to Hurricane Ike barreling toward Texas.

"In light of the unfolding crisis in Texas, Sen. Obama has decided it is no longer appropriate to appear on 'Saturday Night Live' tomorrow evening," Obama spokeswoman Jen Psaki explained in a statement.

Obama's appearance will be rescheduled for a more appropriate time.

I wish he had rescheduled :(

5. It makes sense
He needs to start thinking about that new career path asap. Suggested taglines:

"I'm John McCain and I'm not!"

"Terrorist...Yeeeeah, that's the ticket..."

"Barely alive, from New York, it's Saturday Night!"

but they had to tell him "Wrong decade, Senator."

11. I was going to use it for a thread-starter, but couldn't think of a set up
and then John McCain, the giver of all comedy gifts (or at least Sarah Palin), gave another.

Thanks!

13. SNL gets 8 million views a show this season
Now I'm hearing that Rick Davis said the skit is gonna "knock your socks off" and that this will play well to those undecideds out there. What a joke.

12. Have him play Stuart Smalley
They should have him do the Al Franken Stuart Smalley skit. :)

Talking to himself in the mirror:

"I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me!"

14. Brilliant, BoMonster!
Welcome to DU. :hi:
(I love Stuart Smalley-and Al Franken, of course).
I guess I'll watch SNL again this weekend, in spite of McLame's appearance. I wonder if he'll actually show up.

19. Was hoping for Obama
I was really hoping that the rumors that Obama was going to be on were true. It was probably the last chance we'll got to see him in that sort of role.
I guess I'll just tune in and take McCialis for what he is, a joke.

BTW, thanks for the welcome. I've been reading DU since the '04 election cycle and recently joined. Back then I remember only reading the LBN and then using the links. Haha.

26. That did humanize Nixon
to enough people to enable him to win the election.

America loves a candidate who can laugh at himself, I saw Sen. Obama do that with Jon Stewart the other day, he should have made the time to do it on SNL as well.

22. For what it's worth, Obama HAS already appeared on SNL.
It was on 11-3-2007. I googled "Obama SNL" and found a couple of still active links to his appearance. It was the opening skit, and very funny. I didn't include any of the links here, as I wasn't certain if it was allowed, plus I was worried about copyright infringement or terms of service.

24. Right - the "Halloween Party" sketch, in which Amy Poehler played
Hillary dressed as a witch.

I don't think anyone was questioning his right to appear; they're just shocked at the timing as it would seem he has a rather Herculean task trying to overcome what current polling data is indicating...

23. Let me get this straight. He's spending precious time going to an "anti-American"
part of America to clown around, while the campaign is desperatly struggling to hold its ground on all kinds of previously-considered "safe" territory?

25. Wonder what meds McCain's going to be popping before he does that gig?
They may have to get Darrell Hammond to dub in his slurred voice later...
