Boy sent home from school for dressing as Jesus
Source: WCBSTV

Decked out in sandals, a robe, fake beard and thorns, the 13-year-old joined 500 other students at his school's Halloween celebration, and on this day, he was the chosen one - to go home.

"It was offensive to some students," Woinski said, when asked what school officials told him the reason for being sent home was.

5. I don't see ANY reason why somone shouldn't be able to...
wear a Jesus costume to school. If he's walking around handing out bible passages and sprinkling "holy water" on people, ok, i understand, but just for a costume?!?

I know we should be sensitive to others feelings, but damn, sometimes people just need a sense of humor...

6. WTF!
This is just the kind of attention the Fundies want. Perceived Persecution.

If the principal was worried about "disrupting the educational process" then she shouldn't have let them wear Halloween costumes to school!!!!!! DUH!

The best move here is to let the kid proceed through the day, calling as little attention to him as possible. Sounds like he was just a kid who was appeasing his friends, not trying to make a religious statement. The fact that the principal sent him home is what gave this power & undo attention. I'm sure devils were allowed. If someone dressed up like Buddha, would they have been sent home? Doubtful.

This principal sounds like a mess.

But they could have used stuffing & made it part of the costume.

I hope you understand the point I was trying to make with this example.

7. I am a christian and it wouldn't offend me. Mel Gibson made a fortune by having
an actor portray Jesus. Easter pagents all over the country
have people dressed up like Jesus. I don't find that offensive
why would anyone think a child dress up like him was offensive?
I doubt the child did it to make fun or be malicious.

Jeesh ... but just imagine if he had dressed as Muhammad (in a respectful fashion). Would everyone still have the same opinion?

Is it a new Christian rule that all the sudden you cannot portray Jesus unless it's in a passion play or Jesus Christ Superstar?

I don't think they should have sent the kid home. I think wearing Halloween costumes to school is ridiculous, but that's another issue all together. My son has a classmate who did his book report on one of the Gospels. As long as no one is forcing anyone or intimidating anyone, I'm ok with that and I'm Jewish.

100. Jesus WAS (? is) a Jew
But was (? is) Mohammad a Muslim?

Islamic doctrine is that he and his parents were (and fairly recent case of teacher condemned to death for raising the possibility that his parents, though Godly, were not).

Would it have been OK to go as Pilate, Hitler, Raygun, Bush, Rove - each of these would also offend someone.

I didn't know who he was supposed to be with that waist-length curly brown beard, and was a little startled when he told me. He clearly meant no harm or disrespect.

I guess it depends on which church you go to as to whether that's considered appropriate attire for Halloween. :eyes:

23. We're supposed to dress up as ghouls on Halloween.
Halloween has been perverted in recent decades to allow for ANY costume. The costume is supposed to be scary, not sexy, not religious, not political, not just a super hero outfit. When costumes cross the line from scary gouls, it goes in every direction. Don't be suprised no matter what you see.

Edited on Sat Nov-01-08 04:44 AM by pnwmom
but I'm in my fifties and the majority of costumes weren't ghouls (or witches) even then. I can remember plenty of princesses and fairies and a southern belle among the girls; robots and cowboys and super-heroes among the boys; and animals and clowns in both genders.

Ghouls and ghosts are fine, too -- but not essential. I see nothing wrong with Halloween simply being a holiday of make-believe.

under your rules. Having risen from the dead, Jesus was a zombie. What made him such a special zombie was that instead of eating the flesh and blood of others, he encouraged them to eat his flesh and blood.

42. No ...

No ... Dr. Orpheus very carefully detailed that a zombie is a body without a soul. Jesus has an uber-soul, the avatar of Jaweh. Thus ... not a zombie and not a ghoul.

Hell may be able to animate a body, but it cannot imbue a body with a soul.

BTW, I'm joking.

I can imagine such a costume upsetting, say, a gay little boy who's only heard that jesus allegedly hated teh gays.

Not really your place to define offensive for others.

At least not on Halloween. After all, one fictional character is as good as another, right?

...and it wasn't chosen by a faculty member.

46. How could it be offensive?
Just because you don't believe in Jesus doesn't mean you have to be upset at some kid dressing up as him. If anything, that sort of undermines his godness.

54. New Jersey . Would he have been expelled if he dressed like mohammad ?
It was offensive to some students," Woinski said, when asked what school officials told him the reason for being sent home was.

Would those same "some " students want to crucify him for offending islam ?

66. The hijacking of Halloween...
In my town, a fairly affluent community near Pasadena, CA, there has been a progressively creeping christian fundie influence on everything that happens, from the the way zoning regs for businesses are written (to cater to a local fundie church keen on expanding their church "campus" into the few commercial store fronts available), and local merchants catering to the "family values" crowd.

They have also managed to convince the city council to vote to close a public parking lot at 11 o'clock or midnight, where 24 hour parking is (or rather, was) permitted, because "hooligans" (I kid you not, that is the word they used) would use the lot when patronizing the only local bar/rock club, which has been operating, without major incident, for at least the fifteen-plus years that I've lived here.

So now, Halloween is a controlled, organized religious event for many of these fundies, where the kids are told to dress as Biblical figures, while the more traditional scary costumes are discouraged or simply not allowed.

The fundies pile their biblically costumed kiddies into vans, and drive them block to block, where they are offloaded to scurry house-to-house, with the exception of MY house. I've witnessed, over the last 3-5 years, that large groups of these kids go up and down my block, but they never arrive at my door. And anyone who DOES come to my door gets a ziplock baggie filled with a variety of treats, not just a single item, so they're missing out on a real payoff.

I should say that my Halloween "decorations" besides the traditional jack-o-lantern and lighting, consist mainly of a "scary art" show on my front porch, with appropriate musical accompaniment, featuring real (valuable) art by prominent "lowbrow"/"pop surrealist" artists such as Mark Ryden, Gary Baseman, Jaime GERMS Zacarias, Bonni Reid, Stacy Lande, Tim Biskup, and myself (the least prominent).

Last night, as I stood on my porch watching the silhouettes of a large group of trick-or-treaters in the street in front of my house, the only thing that arrived on my front porch was a "Bomb Bag," although when I heard the loud POP, which sounded like a firecracker, I did not know what it was. This morning, I found the remnant of the "Bomb Bag" which had been thrown at me by one of the fundies, with the sticky liquid contents in a dried pool of slime, right at the threshold of my front door.

Besides the fact that I've got a shitload of treats that did not get handed out, which I have no use for, it is now apparent to me that the "christian" element in this town is taking over, and when it comes to Halloween, they are intent on hijacking the celebration it once was and converting it into a perverted xtian-fundie sham holiday, so next year, I'll take a pass on Halloween.

69. How silly.
Last time I checked we still had freedom of religion here in this country. Besides, it's just Halloween! A kid should be able to dress as Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha, or whoever.

it was the wrong thing to send him home even if he did offend some. Religious people need to learn to respect diversity when they are in a public-supported entity.

The school was wrong. When you start censoring expression, you'd better have a bright and fair line distinguishing what is acceptable and what is not.
