Sarah Palin effigy burned on bonfire
Source: Telegraph

US Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin will be blown up at Britain's oldest bonfire celebrations – dressed up as a Rambo.

The Republican Governor of Alaska has been made into a giant effigy, with a tiny Barack Obama sitting behind her in a tin hat peppered with bullet holes with 'O'Blimey' written across it.

The pit bull with lipstick will be loaded with explosives and torched at the site of the Battle of Hastings in East Sussex.

2. Gotta' love those Brits.
Could you imagine Bush standing in front of the House of Representatives answering weekly questions like the Brit's PM does in front of the House of Commons?

Does that bring a smile to your face? Then the very thought of a president Palin (God forbid!) doing the same should have your rolling on the floor in near apoplectic shock.

3. Not after Harry Taylor.
Every time I think about Harry standing up like that I get the shivers. I could not have done that, I would have passed out.

25. like this
He was one of the few invited to hear Bush speak at the college where I worked. April 6th, 2006.

Ruined my birthday until Harry Taylor saved the day.

But until Taylor came along, no one had really gotten in Bush's face. No one had really confronted him so directly on the issues of war and liberty that are at the heart of both his presidency and his political troubles. And no one had given him the opportunity to look unbothered by dissent.

"I would hope, from time to time, that you have the humility and the grace to be ashamed of yourself," Taylor told Bush after rattling off a litany of grievances.

5. that was interesting
I still have a hard time sorting that whole thing out.

At any rate, I do love the British humor, as well as the food. Oh, and the literature. And the history. And the... just about everything really.

The only British person I've ever met didn't like me though. I have a thick Southern accent and she said she couldn't understand me and got mad that I couldn't understand her. Said something about maybe she needed to speak more s l o w l y.

8. From the picture,
I can't imagine how they burned one without burning the other.

I'm just glad it wasn't done by Dems (or Repubs masquerading as Dems) in the US.

16. Jesse Washington- given a Repuke texas welcome

A postcard showing the burned body of Jesse Washington, Waco, Texas, 1916. This image is from a postcard, which said on the back, "This is the barbecue we had last night. My picture is to the left with a cross over it. Your son, Joe."

After hearing the evidence, a jury of 12 white men deliberated for only four minutes before returning a guilty verdict and assessing the death penalty. Before law officers could remove Washington from the court, a group of white spectators surged forward and seized the convicted youth. They hurried him down the stairs at the rear of the courthouse, where a crowd of about 400 persons waited in the alley. A chain was thrown around Washington's neck before he was dragged toward the City Hall, where another group of vigilantes had gathered to build a human bonfire.

"The boy was beaten and dragged to the suspension bridge spanning the Brazos River. Thousands roared, "Burn him!" Bonfire preparations were already under way in the public square, where Washington was beaten with shovels and bricks. Fifteen thousand men, women, and children packed the square. They climbed up poles and onto the tops of cars, hung from windows, and sat on each other's shoulders. Children were lifted by their parents into the air. Washington was castrated, and his ears were cut off. A tree supported the iron chain that lifted him above the fire of boxes and sticks. Wailing, the boy attempted to climb the skillet-hot chain. For this the men cut off his fingers. The executioners repeatedly lowered the boy into the flames and hoisted him out again. With each repetition, a mighty shout was raised."

Though lynching violated Texas law, no members of the mob were prosecuted. However, the foreman of Washington's jury criticized local law officers for failing to prevent the lynching, and a special committee of Baylor University faculty passed resolutions denouncing mobs. A. T. Smith, an African American journalist, editor of the Paul Quinn Weekly, was arrested and convicted of criminal libel after he printed allegations that Lucy Fryer's husband had committed the murder.

20. Sadly many of these men were probably southern democrats.
Wilson won Texas with 77% of the vote in 1916. I appreciate you posting this it's good to remember where we've come from. I don't however see how it has anything to do with my post.

27. My grandparents came from Germany just before WW I
They lived in Milwaukee and were socialists.

http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/turningpoints/tp-043/?action=more_essay

They were elected to many offices in Milwaukee.

No "democrats" in my background participated in lynching

The democratic party in texas in 1916 was not much different than the repukes there today.

They are probably all dead by now. I don't hear of many lynchings today so I'd say both republicans and democrats are quite different today. We are 2 days from electing a black man for president with the votes of many "republicans" I'd say things have changed quite a bit.

22. Yeah, Shame on us, sort of....
If you go to the Freepers site, you can see some real vitriol. I go there occassionally to see what they are saying and there is some pretty authentic sounding hatrid and racism going on. Here, I am just demonstrating my rather tasteless sense of humor.

At the same time, if she were to become the vice president and you were to add up all of the pain that would have been inflicted upon us by 4 (potentially 8) years of listening to her speak, I would say that pain would outweigh the pain of being burned at the stake. Fortunately, I would be immune to it because I would have immediately clawed my eardrums out about 30 seconds into her acceptance speech.
