Police believe the bombings were planned to avenge the killing of 47 Muslim settlers in the region last month.

Many shop owners in Assam closed for 12 hours this weekend to protest against what they say is police inaction over ongoing violence in the state.

The fierce peasant communist insurgency that controls large swaths of the country's heartland gets little attention.
