78 Percent Of U.S. Hispanics Favor Obama Over McCain
Source: NYT/Reuters

PHOENIX (Reuters) - In the final stretch to the U.S. presidential election, more than three quarters of likely Hispanic voters say they support Democrat Barack Obama over Republican John McCain, a study found.

The Univision/Reuters/Zogby poll released on Tuesday said that 78 percent of a sample of 1,016 Latino likely voters favored Sen. Obama, with 13 percent supporting McCain, an Arizona senator.

The poll, which was conducted between October 30 and November 2, found that 54 percent of respondents said the economy and jobs were the most important issue in deciding who to vote for, followed by health care and immigration, with 12 percent and 11 percent respectively.

Hispanics make up 15 percent of the U.S. population and 9 percent of the electorate, and could be a critical swing voting bloc in battleground states in the U.S. Southwest as well as Florida on Tuesday.

In 2004, President George W. Bush won about 40 percent of the Latino vote -- a Republican record -- when he beat Democrat John Kerry. But opinion polls show Republican standing among Hispanics has since been hurt by a shrill national debate over immigration reform and a worsening economy....

1. Zogby is horseshit.
But there is no question Obama will get at least 60% of the Latino vote.

The percentage is higher outside Florida
Cuban Americans, for whatever reason, tend to support the GOP more than the rest of the Hispanic population.

So, outside of Florida, the swing effect may be even greater.

14. There is a large pocket of Cuban-Americans in northern NJ
centerd around Union City in Hudson County.

They've even managed to elect a Senator -- a Democrat, Bob Menendez.

7. Cuban Americans traditionally support the GOP because of that party's
pronounced anti-Castro and anti-communism platform. However, I imagine the tanking economy has upset that old alliance somewhat.

18. Republicans Are Castro's Best Friends
We had a long debate about this on the old Miami Herald forum and we beat the Repukeblicans on this matter:

Republican refusal to deal with Castro is what entrenched his communist regime there.

The Democrats wanted to engage in commerce with Cuba. This type of exchange is what stimulated reform in Russia and Eastern Europe. Had the Democrats had their way, Cuba would have undergone reform a LONG time ago! Cuba would now be a democracy just like the former Soviet Bloc!!!

After we had those ideas exchanged on the Miami forum, several Cubans fessed up and said that, yes, contrary to what so many people believe, it is the Republicans who have imposed communism in Cuba! After all, Castro came into power when Republican Eisenhower was in office. He admitted in his memoirs that it was he who bungled the Bay of Pigs disaster. Thus, without the Republicans, Castro would neither have gone into power nor would his communist reigme have been entrenched there.

Every time a Cuban votes Republican he/she is further entrenching communism in Cuba! That remains a fact whether Cubanos like to admit it or not.

13. Younger Cuban-Americans, those born here, are starting to trend Dem
remember, other than the Marielitos in 1980, those who fled Castro and still hold on to irredentist pipe dreams did so nearly a half century ago -- perfect demographics for McThuselah.

12. Oh man, you have no idea.
I was outside waiting for early voting on Saturday and there was some dumbass walking around with a sign that said something like, "Castro wanted change. Cuba got change in 1959". And this was a youngish looking woman walking around with that stupid shit. I couldn't believe my eyes.

The Cuban Americans around here (not all of em) are corrupt to the fucking gills.

3. I'm sure that's not too far from reality.
But we should understand that "Hispanics" is a possible misnomer. There are whites of Iberian descent, indigenous people, and mestizos. I imagine McCain fairs respectably among the whites and miserably among the others.

8. The target was 70%
Daily Kos has been showing in the mid-60s for weeks and was at 63% this morning. But I have a feeling Kos' sampling of Latinos was very small.

9. Those subsamples have a terrible margin of error.
I don't even know, would the same confidence level apply? I think not.
