Medical marijuana proposal approved by Michigan voters

Michigan voters approved the use of marijuana to treat debilitating illness today, according to an examination of key precincts by the National Election Pool, making the state the 13th to sanction so-called medical marijuana.

A spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project in Washington, D.C., chief sponsor of the ballot initiative, said that after today’s election one in every four Americans will now live in a place where patients can use marijuana without fear of prosecution.

3. Hopefully one of the programs that Obama will cut is the drug war program
Doesn't work. Marijuana is actually beneficial.

4. "The War on Marijuana" is also incredibly expensive...
in both the monetary and social costs.

Besides, we'll need all those prison beds for Republicans after February.

6. so do you need a prescription to grow your own pot?
I mean I voted for it but I better go back and read the fine print. This one will go to the courts for sure.

7. Not a prescription, but a doctor's recommendation.
Medical marijuana states don't require prescriptions because that would expose doctors to the DEA taking their licenses if they prescribe pot, so they merely "recommend."

This is a tightly drawn medical marijuana law; it will probably help a relative handful of people.

But Michigan marks the first breakthrough in the Midwest.

8. Yes.
Btw, welcome to the fold, Michigan! I'm not sure how it will work in Michigan, but in CA, there are clinics and doctors that will issue a 'script and issue you a certificate so if you are growing or smoking it in public and are challenged, you can whip out your cert and you're good. As to how much pot you can grow, that will be up to the state. If we can't grow it (lack of yard, etc.), we have dispensaries in various counties from which you can buy it. Again, all you have to do is whip out your cert and have enough money to pay for it. Btw, dispensary pot is some of the best pot I've ever had!

9. Michigan's law is much, much tighter than California's.
There will be no dispensaries, no public pot smoking allowed, and patients can grow small amounts only.

Opponents tried to portray the Michigan initiative as being like California's law and tried to scare voters with claims there would be pot shops on every block. That was transparently bogus.

While the Michigan law (and those of most other states) tightly regulate who qualifies, California's law has that wide open language of "any other condition" which may be alleviated by pot, and it has the dispensary provisions. I'm moving to California next month.
