NBC: OBAMA ELECTED 44TH PRESIDENT

Illinois senator to become first African-American executive in U.S. history

BREAKING NEWS

updated 2 minutes ago

Barack Obama, a 47-year-old first-term senator from Illinois, shattered more than 200 years of history Tuesday night by winning election as the first African-American president in the history of the United States, according to projections by NBC News. Obama reached the 270 electoral votes he needed for election at 11 p.m. ET, when NBC News projected that he would win California, Washington and Oregon.

Campaigning as a technocratic agent of change in Washington, not as a pathbreaking civil rights figure, Obama swept to victory over Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, whose running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, was seeking to become the nation’s first female vice president.

A crowd nearing 100,000 people gathered in Grant Park in Chicago, awaiting an address by Obama. Hundreds of thousands more — Mayor Richard Daley said he would not be surprised if a million Chicagoans jammed the streets — were watching on a large television screen outside the park.

Surveys of voters as they left polling places nationwide indicated the breadth of Obama’s victory. As expected, he won overwhelmingly among African-American voters, but he also won a slim majority of white voters. He won among women and Latino voters, reversing a longstanding Republican trend. And he won by more than 2-to-1 among voters of all races 30 years old and younger.

That dynamic was telling in Ohio, which President Bush won in 2004, and in Pennsylvania, where McCain poured in millions of dollars of scarce resources. Obama won both.

We heard that this global economic crisis hit Iceland very hard - what's going on now in Iceland?

Iceland is on my places to visit list. When the U.S. Dollar bounces back I intend to vacation in Iceland.

181. I'm shedding tears of relief built up over the last 8 years
I haven't cried this much since Al Gore's concession speech.

Obama has the talent, the wisdom of Al Gore, of Bill Clinton, of John Kennedy, of MLK and a task almost as monumental as Lincoln's.

We have a president! The hatemongers are out of office.

I play this over and over in the last hour (and I'm an atheist).
And I put an American Flag at the end of my driveway tonight. We have our country back!

258. I cried all last night...
And when I woke up this morning. My 7 year old daughter asked who on and I told her Obama. She was so happy. I replayed Obama's speach for her and I started to cry again. Hopefully someday she will fully understand the significance of Obama being elected as our President FOR ALL THE PEOPLE, not just for the white, rich, and Christian population. I loved how people stormed the White House fence. I cannot wait for Bush to get the hell out!

And thank you for asking!

My Egyptian neighbors who follow American politics figured McCain would just continue the failed Bush policies. (Just like us.)

All day long at work, I had Egyptians coming up to congratulate me and wish PRESIDENT OBAMA "good luck." I wore All Blue to work--dark blue trousers and a bright blue checked shirt. I explained I was showing the colors of Obama's political party. Some of them obviously lurk on DU because they knew that already. :-)

They are also as realistic as most of us, and said they didn't expect things to change much immediately. But they say they have "more hope" things will improve.

Weird and irrelevant personal note, but I like it: this morning, like almost every morning, I heard the old man down the street yelling for his little grand-daughter to get out of the apartment, come down and meet the school bus. He yells her name over and over: "Amal! Amal!"

In Arabic, "amal" means...hope! And she eventually came storming down, braids flying and Hello Kitty backpack bouncing, to get on the bus. And I couldn't help thinking: yep, that's the "hope" for all of us. A child going to school.

After work I went to get some take-out Italian food. All around me, people were chattering in Arabic but I could certainly hear "Obama" being repeated over and over.

It has been a great day, and now I'm toasting PRESIDENT OBAMA with a Wild Turkey. Or three!

I hope the whole world will give Obama a chance to right the wrongs done by the Bush Administration. It's been heart breaking to see our reputation turn so ugly.

86. Thank you, Pres. Obama
For giving us HOPE.

For making us believe.

For giving us faith in our fellow Americans.

And for helping me bet on the good sense of my fellow Floridians (though in the end you didn't need Florida after all...)

You have restored my faith that we can choose leaders who represent the best of us, not the worst of us.

At 11 p.m. ET, I walked into my daughter's Tinkerbell-decorated room and gave her a kiss while she slept surrounded by stuffed animals. This victory is for HER.

194. I canvassed today for the first time in my life
I have never felt so moved to work for a candidate. And so many did so much more. Thank you to them and thank you to Obama. I can finally look up to the highest office in our land without shame again.

I broke down right after it was announced. This is the death knell for Reaganism. This is the end of the Bush dynasty (forget it Jeb). This a repudiation of Rove and his tactics. This is a shout from the highest mountain to the religious right that they need to change their ways. This is a crystal clear message to Rush, Hannity, O'Reilly, and Savage that we have had enough of the lies, deceit, and hate-mongering. And this is the breaking of the stranglehold on patriotism that the right has co-opted for so many years.

I got started at DU and other liberal websites during and right after the recount. The last eight years I have been able to taste the bile while America was poisoned by the greedy and the hateful. I watched the country break in two (which is especially criminal after 9/11 briefly brought it together). I've seen the other countries of the world just shake their heads in amazement at our stupidity and hubris. And it is finally over...eight years of hell (14 when we think back to the Contract with America thugs in 94). We, the democrats and other liberals, are vindicated. America finally stood up to the garbage and decided to move in the right direction, the direction we have wanted for years.

I've never been as proud of my country as I am right now.

219. tonight the United States grew up . . . I never thought I'd see the day . . .
when this nation would elect a black president -- much less a black president named Barack Hussein Obama . . . this election restores my faith in the promise of America, and I look forward to the massive changes that we'll be going through in the next four years . . .

congratulations to us . . . :patriot:

227. Now our work begins
I am so full of joy I can not describe...

However, we must remember, our work begins now that hope has been restored. We must ask "What can I do to help the world today?" and one deed at a time continue this dream.

America has overcome (mostly now) it's racism. Obama is the first "African American" president but he did NOT win because of that, he won because of the "Content of his Character."

America seems to have overcome now what destroyed Ancient Rome; The stage where an elite clique of people "Voted themselves money" until the system crashed. We can now turn this around, and the pain of an even mild re-regulation period will scare the elites into behaving for decades, those it does not remove from that role.

But we must work for it, and not for "Left" versus "Right" or any of that garbage, there is a much bigger goal:

We have a new goal, one that goes beyond restoring America and shining the true beacon of liberty to the world;

A new solar system has been discovered, one like our own but 10.5 light years away.
http://blog.wired.com/wiredscience/2008/10/nearby-solar-sy.html

Imagine: Just as the challenge to go to the moon began, so we shall also work towards this goal which itself will be again as challenging as going to the moon was. It will take a balanced world and decades of work, but we can do this. We can scan the heavens to see a better image, we can send a probe, we can send a mission.

It is a system much like our own a few billion years previously. There should be a "Mars" ready for life, but due to size and distance without a "Future" like Earth's. And inner still, there will be a young planet just like earth. We can have a second earth to double humanity's chances of survival, an extra note in the cosmic fuge, and we can watch and perhaps sheppard a younger earth so life bears fruit. Perhaps in strange aeons from now life will evolve on that world and on a dead, dry world farther from their sun they will find giant monuments that will speak of something earlier than them that came and left with hardly a trace.

There are words attributed to God that apply here:

"I call the Heavens to bear witness that I have set before thee the gates of Life and of Death, the blessing and the curse. Therefore, choose life, that thou mayest live. Thou and thy seed."

We choose "Baraka" the Blessing. We rejected the "Curse" of McCAIN, and his "Dark vision of hatred and fear". The first choice is life for us and for humanity, then the heavens themselves open up to witness our choices.

Well done guys.

Hating American foreign policy was wearing the whole world down! ;-)

This is indeed a great day and so many of us around the world are relieved to see
a US President so endowed with intelligence, poise and grace.

To all those who fought for his election and for change I and my friends and family extend our thanks and best wishes.

It is no exaggeration to say that grown men cried openly in relief and gratitude here in Oz today...I was one of them.

My only fear is that hopes and expectations may have been raised too high in times that are going to be very tough.

But what the hell....celebrate.....and have a beer for me mate!

Time to start healing the divisions of fear, hatred, and paranoia in America and around the world, that have been created, and exploited for political gain.

President-elect Obama is the right man, at the right time to help us all to aspire toward our better natures now.

...But now we must. Must keep the pressure for real change. Time to end 28 years of soaring inequality and corporate privilege. Time to green our economy. Time to push forward with LGBT rights at the federal level. Time to wage peace with the rest of the world. Time to save the climate.

This is only the end of the beginning of the beginning, folks.

at least 8 years. I didn't know I would ever be proud to be one again. I thought the election would be stolen again.

Michelle is going to make a classy first lady. It was so wonderful I had to try to keep from crying while Barack made his speech.

America finally grew up. Barack broke through the racial glass ceiling and I'm so proud I voted for him. His speech was wonderful. He never played the race card during the election but he understands how important being a black man and winning is for all races in America. What a historic night! And he really is going to put this place on the right track.

We need Barack to save America right now. If only all of the equality activist could be here - or know how important the people they paved this seemingly un-build-able road for are going to be to this country. Wish Rosa Parks were here. And Martin Luther King. I think they would be very proud if they knew it would be Barack who is the man who finally got all the way.

249. View from the UK - we're so happy!!!
I've just arrived at work - small company but we do a bit of international stuff.....

Everybody, and I mean EVERYBODY is in a fantastic mood, laughing and joking in the office and saying how great this news is.

On BBC Radio 4 news this morning they talked about how this is a victory against Republican mean-spiritidness and the view that "you're either 100% with us or you're against us".

In my opinion this is a victory for hope, for humanity, for fairness. It's a victory against insularity, small-mindedness, selfishness. It's a victory that will help America and the Western World move forward together instead of prioritising individual citizens and countries above all others.

It's a victory for the positive over the negative.
For compassion over the "every man for himself" mentality.
For understanding instead of judgement.

I haven't posted on DU for a long time, largely because I've been so disillusioned with a country I love (the US) being run by such a cold, self-centred regime.

This morning I drove to work shedding tears of joy that the world has turned a corner and that there is hope.

I realise that the US and the world face huge problems and that Obama won't be able to fix them overnight, but we sure as hell know that Bush has made the world a worse place to live in and that McCain and Palin would have been incompetant at best and damaging at worst.

My very best wishes to all my DU friends and all of the US. Let's hope that you can re-take your rightful place as a great friend to all, rather than the petulant and self-obsessed enemy that the US has been under Bush.

Well done to you all!!!!!!!

Congratulations to the people of the USA, I am so pleased for you.

Today`s result is not just an tremendous achievement for you domestically, it also sends a wonderful signal to the international community.

We got rid of Bush`s buddy (Howard) around 12 months ago, it`s great to see you return the compliment!

Good riddance to the politics of fear and division as practised in both countries by the conservatives.

Good luck for the future. I am sure Mr Obama will do you proud, despite the magnitude of the task he has in cleaning up the shambles left by eight years of Republican government.

Cheers.

300. Well, I can see I won't be getting much work done today either!!
Yesterday I was a nervous wreck. Today, my feet aren't even touching the floor!!!

We brought them down, by God. We brought them down.

301. This country has Hope again
When I was 8 years old, my Dad took me to see JFK's motorcade go by when he was campaigning for President. I still remember it like it was yesterday. That was the last President in MHO that truly brought hope to this country. That hope died on Nov. 22,1963, but is now back again. May God bless Obama and protect him. What a great time this is to be an American!!!! Thanks to all who helped out on the campaign. Our group got together last night and watched Obama's historic speech. What a great night it was!!!

If anyone remembers the "Sorry World" site after the 04 election, this site is a really nice version of that idea after the Nov 4 landslide. :)

303. our future
i sit here in tears, america is going to survive. the sun is shining again in the united states. as a senior citizen, i will not have to choose between human food or my cats' food, food and medication, life or suicide. what irony, to look to a black man for my survival, when they looked to us for the same some years ago. i cried then too for them. we have to erase the line between the color of skin, the slant of our eyes or who we choose to love and marry. the religious fanatics need to go back in their holes and we must work to never let them out again.

WE ARE THE UNITED STATES. THE SUN WILL SHINE FOR ALL OF US IF WE WORK TO LET IT

305. For the First Time in Eight Years
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 12:53 PM by Liberalynn
I feel we have a democratically elected President. It is good to be able to respect the man in that office again.

I put out my U.S. flag this morning for the first time in eight years.

Damn I am proud of this country again.

Yes I do have hope, and for me, normally a pessimist, that's saying a lot.

Its funny early Monday morning, in the wee hours, I had a dream about my former Professor who turned me into a Democrat back in 1980. Sadly he didn't live to see this day. He died of cancer. In my dream, he was walking down the aisle of some auditorium waving, and when he passed by me, he patted me on the back, and grinned. I had a feeling it was all going to be okay from there.

I know Jack is doing a happy dance somewhere right now, and so am I down here.

Thank you President Obama and Vice President Biden for giving us back our country.

Bless you and Congratulations to your entire team.

I do not trust the Lame Duck. He still holds the power, and he's probably got a trick or two up his sleeve.

314. From the NOW BLUE state of Ohio, I salute the NEW PRESIDENT.
FINALLY . . . a President who I can capitalize and not make fun of his name.

A president with a plan and not a whim.

A president with the very real power of getting big and much needed changes pushed through.

A president that understands that this is a nation of WE and not a nation of ME.

A President.

Remember what that was?

Respect has just been restored.

We'll all stand by you, as long as you'll listen to us.
