Nation watches as a divided California votes on same-sex marriage

A measure to ban gay marriage was leading in early returns primarily from conservative counties but exit polls showed the race as too close to call.

Proposition 8 would amend the California Constitution to define marriage as only between a man and a woman. Exit poll data showed that Democrats and independents were tending to vote against Proposition 8, while Republicans were in favor of the measure.

1. It's not going to pass
Since the polls have closed, the lead has been getting smaller and smaller, and once the urban cities start to really begin reporting and influencing the vote numbers, you're going to see it begin failing.

4. Stupid fucking Mormons.
It had BETTER pass. My cousin and his boyfriend got married on Saturday, and they better not get their rights annulled.

6. I have had friends who were Mormons in the past,
but if the right to marriage is taken from gays, it will be hard for me to be civil.

So hopefully they won't pass it.

19. I think you mean it had better NOT pass
I am worried some voters may be confused. This is a BAN. So if it passes - NO gay marriage.

5. Re: chill - I can understand why people are anxious.
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 01:29 AM by TwilightZone
It's 53/47 for, with 29% reporting. I think the reason for the anxiety is that a lot of people had hoped that it would fail miserably, not that we'd be hoping for a late-evening surge to ensure its defeat.

Edit: the exit polls show it nearly dead even: http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/results/polls/#CAI01p1

12. Very upsetting
I really thought this would be defeated. I can't believe we allowed money and discrimination from another state to alter our constitution. Sickening.

Protect marriage my ass! What 'protects' marriage is less divorce and adultery, not keeping people from creating families.

This is not the end...we will not let this be the last word!

13. it is not over yet
and regardless, I expect one of these to pass and go all the way to the USSC sooner or later.

It is not California... but the idiots who want to impose their religion on others

Which reminds me, the IRS should remove the status of the Mormon, Catholic and some Fundy churches... they want to play politics... fine... pay your taxes

but it is not over... this is CLOSE and has been tightening

14. wwhat we know: it wasn't just 'mormons' in the end -- many who have
cast votes for obama -- voted yes on 8.

maybe it doesn't pass -- but what gay folk knoe is that the feelings in the population at large
isn't comforting -- at all.

now if the obama is your only 'cause celeb' -- then you are happy tonight.

but for many of us -- 'chill' is not what we want to hear.

and I will continue to fight it

I expect this to end up at the USSC... and the precedent for WHY marriage between Hispanics and oh Anglos will be used before California Courts

Mark my words.. not the last word on this

But it is STILL CLOSE

17. Arizona, too
Two years ago, they were the first state in the history of the nation to turn back this form of hate. Yesterday, they got on the hate bandwagon along with California.

But, what did we expect? There wasn't an inch of difference between Obama-Biden and McCain-Palin when it came to recognizing equal marriage. That much became clearly evident at the VP debate. Hopefully, now that he's been elected, President Obama will be able to stand up for equality for all.
