World cheers Obama victory, crosses fingers for strong international leadership
Source: Baltimore Sun

PARIS (AP) _ The election of Barack Obama as the first black man in the White House unleashed a global tide of admiration, hopes for change, and even renewed love for the United States after years of dwindling good will during the Bush administration.

In Europe on Wednesday, some likened Obama's stunning ascent power to Neil Armstrong's first steps on the moon, the release of Nelson Mandela and the fall of the Berlin Wall as a turning point for humanity...."This is the fall of the Berlin Wall times 10," Rama Yade, France's black junior minister for human rights, told French radio. "America is rebecoming a New World...On this morning, we all want to be American so we can take a bite of this dream unfolding before our eyes," she said."

...In Rio, Brazilians partied on the beach. Akihiko Mukohama, the lead singer of a band that traveled to Obama, Japan, to perform, gushed that Obama's election "is going to change the world." In Indonesia, where Obama lived as a child, hundreds of students at his former elementary school cheered when he was declared winner and poured into the courtyard where they hugged each other, danced in the rain and chanted "Obama! Obama!"

..."We hated Bush so much and we wanted so much to love America — and now, again, we can," said Dominique Moisi, one of France's foremost foreign policy analysts..."At a time when we have to confront immense challenges together, your election raises great hopes in France, in Europe and in the rest of the world," French President Nicolas Sarkozy said in a congratulations letter to Obama.

Berlin:
Hula hoop dancers and hot dogs--all across Berlin, people went wild for Obama this Election Night 2008.Berlin goes wild for Obama
"Berlin may be known as a laid back city, but apparently the German capital made an exception for watching the final hours of the epic battle between Obama and McCain. At numerous large parties across the city, Berliners, American expats, and America fans gathered to take in the excitement, all through the night."

1. I'm just awestruck how the whole world is celebrating with us

That, simply winning the presidency, Obama has drawn people all over the world together. (Not that winning the presidency was any small feat.)

I'm still in a daze-- this will take a long time to sink in!!!!!!!!!

6. Canada is excited too!
We've had a big Obama for President billboard up in our city for the past 6 months or so. I don't know who paid for it, but I bet they're ecstatic!

3. That is fabulous! What fun (except the hangover ;)
It's thrilling to imagine -FEEL!- this world-wide celebration in all its forms. It is like New Year's Eve 1999/2000!

7. It was beautiful. Tears of joy...
from everyone, and the happiness that my foreign friends felt for Americans, and themselves, was amazing.

10. I HOPED the world would see we were under rule of an evil dictatorship
that stole elections and held us all hostage! At first it seemed everyone thought we were all SO dumb for voting for him. The deeper into the BFEE administration we got, the more it became clear to everyone, maybe.

Man I just love everyone today !! except Rethugs. Just can't make that leap ;)
