Dick Cheney battles Laura Bush over protecting Pacific Ocean
Source: LA Times

With less than three months left in the Bush administration, the battle over protecting two vast areas of the Pacific Ocean from fishing and mineral exploitation is raging as if the president's legacy depended on it.

Which, actually, it does.

On one side is first lady Laura Bush, who according to the Washington Post has asked for two briefings on the issue from the White House staff, and has asked her aides to confer with scientists on how to preserve diverse ecosystems.

On the other side is Vice President Dick Cheney, who argues that banning fishing and mineral exploration will hurt the region's economy.

8. So now it's a big issue for her?
was it an issue when she was out trying to convert gang bangers? what happened with that? or was it an issue when she was over in saudi land trying to "push" for womans rights? what happened to that? so now she's trying to save the oceans? three months from now, we will be asking what happened with that.

she, of the same fabric as moron*, is trying desperately to leave a legacy. sorry folks, but last minute baskets when you are getting blown out doesn't win you the hoops championship.

Laura's husband takes pride in destroying something we absolutely cannot live without.

Is there a reason they do not leave this matter to Pacific states?

24. The areas in question are U.S. Commonwealths, so in a way we are the Pacific state
that has jurisdiction. And to be fair, Laura's husband has been pushing this for a while - it's pretty much the one thing he's done right over the years...

in such things. Atleast she never seemed to show
much concern in an outward way.

According to Repugs, the remotest possibility that someone *might* make profits off of something is sufficient reason to pre-empt any and all limitations on its exploitation. They just see no alternative approach to "use it all up".
