Obama adds symbolic NC victory to White House win
Source: Associated Press

President-elect Obama has won North Carolina, a symbolic triumph in a state that hadn't voted for a Democrat in more than a generation.

The Associated Press declared Obama the winner Thursday after canvassing counties in North Carolina to determine the number of outstanding provisional ballots.

That survey found that there are not enough remaining ballots for Republican John McCain to close a 13,693-vote deficit.

North Carolina's 15 electoral votes brings Obama's total to 364 - nearly 100 more than necessary to win the White House. Missouri is the only state that remains too close to call.

1. "Symbolic?"
That's kind of insulting to the people who busted their asses to deliver that state.

15 electoral votes is "symbolic"?

10. It's only "symbolic" at this point because the audit is
still going on. The SBOE here is due to complete the audit by Nov 20th and will certify by Dec 1st. But fear not, my friend; a spokesman for the SBOE said that the provisionals always break for the winner and McKook will not have enough votes to bridge the gap. In such a close race, an audit is called for. It's the rules working, so I'm not upset in the least. Yeah, it would have been awfully nice to have the EV's awarded right away, but the fact that they're counting the provisionals and already allowing as how they'll likely break for Barack anyway, that says to me that they're making sure that every vote is counted.

Every. Isn't that what we wanted? That's what this Tarheel wants. Every vote. Especially after folks waited in lines for so long, or had problems, or for whatever reason didn't get an equal chance. Me? I want every blue vote, yeah, but realistically and fairly, every possible vote.

Grab my hand and hang on with me. It's gonna be cool. NC has finally seceded from Dumfuckistan!!

We're Blue, having tossed out Biddy Dole, elected Kay Hagen in her place; we got our first woman governor, a Dem, Bev Perdue; we picked up a couple of new Dem seats in the House -- 's'all good!

20. This makes me very happy.....
I used to live there and for a Northern "transplant" that could be very difficult sometimes, but that was 16 years ago and I'm glad to see that NC is becoming more and more progressive and BLUE.

Thanks for all the hard work you did.

12. I though MO was called for McCain, bringing him to 174.
If so, there goes that "as Missouri goes, so goes the nation."

15. NBC CALLS NC FOR OBAMA
NBC News has declared Barack Obama the projected winner of North Carolina's 15 electoral votes.

As we noted in First Read this morning, elections officials will count the remaining provisional ballots and formalize the state's election results later this month.

North Carolina joins Indiana on the list of previously ruby-red states in Obama's column. George W. Bush won the state by 12 points in 2004.

17. There is ONE electoral vote still outstanding here in Nebraska.
Hundreds of us canvassed and called and called and canvassed for that one vote. Obama is only 500+ down from McCain in this District and there are thousands of provisional and absentee ballots still to be counted.

WE worked soooooooooooooo hard for that one vote. It should be ours!

Obama adds North Carolina to White House win

By MIKE BAKER and BARBARA RODRIGUEZ, Associated Press Writers – Thu Nov 6, 3:27 pm ET

RALEIGH, N.C. – President-elect Obama won North Carolina on Thursday, a triumph that underscored his political strength as he turned nine states that President Bush won in 2004 to Democratic blue. The Associated Press declared Obama the winner after canvassing counties in North Carolina to determine the number of outstanding provisional ballots. That survey found that there are not enough remaining ballots for Republican John McCain to close a 13,693-vote deficit.

North Carolina's 15 electoral votes brings Obama's total to 364 — nearly 100 more than necessary to win the White House — to McCain's 162. Missouri is the only state that remains too close to call, with McCain leading by several thousand votes.

Obama's win in North Carolina was the first for a Democratic presidential candidate since Jimmy Carter won the state in 1976.

Of Bush's 2004 states, Obama captured Virginia, Florida and North Carolina in the South, Ohio, Indiana and Iowa in the Midwest and Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico in the West. All total, Obama has won 28 states and the District of Columbia, McCain 21.
