US President-Elect Obama’s Grandmother Wants to Attend Inauguration
Source: Voice of America News

US President-Elect Barack Obama's grandmother says she wants to travel to the United States to witness the inauguration of her grandson on January 20, 2009. The 84-year-old Sarah says she will bring with her Obama's favorite food, chapatti, a traditional Kenyan pastry. Although Sarah is Obama's step grandmother, the president-elect reportedly treats her like his natural grandmother. Meanwhile Kenyans are still celebrating after the unity government declared yesterday (Thursday) a national holiday in celebration of President-Elect Obama's victory in the US general election. The neighbors of Grandmother Sarah reportedly offered 10 bulls for a feast to celebrate Obama's victory.

Kabiru Kinyanjui is a Kenyan political science professor. He tells reporter Peter Clottey from the capital, Nairobi that the youth are also in support of Grandmother Sarah attending President-elect Obama's inauguration.

"This is what has been reported and a lot of people are supportive of her coming to be there to witness her grandson there being inaugurated as the first black president of the United States. Many Kenyans support this and would like to see her there to bless her grandson," Kinyanjui noted.

He said Kenyans are still celebrating the victory of US President-elect Barack Obama.

13. that's right.
She was married to his grandfather, but is not his blood relative grandmother.

I hope the whole clan comes over for the event. He has several half-siblings in Kenya, along with their kids, etc.

4. Perhaps his paternal grandma...
died when his father was rather young (or before Obama met her) and Sarah is his paternal grandfather's second wife?

7. Family should be off limits unless it would affect his governance
Edited on Fri Nov-07-08 07:14 PM by Mithreal
Hear that media and fellow DU'ers. President-Elect Obama deserves to handle family as he chooses and leave it there.

Of course, talking about it being a joyful moment is cool with me.

19. Chapatti (bread; popular in India, East Africa and Malaysia)
Ingredients:
2 cups flour, sifted (Whole Wheat is traditional)
Cold water
Salt to taste
1 Tablespoon oil (for the mixture)
oil for frying

Put the flour in a bowl and add salt and oil and mix well. Slowly add the cold water and knead, making a soft dough. Cover with a damp cloth and set aside for 1-2 hours.

Divide the dough into 10 portions and roll each one into a round ball. Flour your working surface and roll each one into a round pancake about 5-6" in diameter. Shake off the excess flour and set aside until they are all done. You can also start cooking after the first one is done. Heat an iron frying pan or Tawa on medium heat. Oil the pan and place the chapatti on the pan and cook for about a minute or bubbles start to appear and then turn over. The chapattis might puff up on their own or place over a gas flame for a few seconds. Place the chapattis between napkins until ready to be served.

21. i've been making chapattis for my family for over 25 years..

something i learned to do when i was a still young and foolish Hare Krishna. They are very versatile; you can

put peanut butter on them for snacks, spread cream cheese, lettuce and tomatoes and roll them up, melt cheese

on them, or serve the old fashioned way, hot off the griddle and (the way i learned) buttered on both sides.

In fact, i'm making some tomorrow for a weekly pot-luck!

26. Seems to me that should read
"One of President-Elect Obama's Grandfather's Other Wives Wants to Attend Inauguration'. I suppose, eventually, one of these headline writers will figure out accuracy does matter to some.
