China's president wants to cooperate with Obama
Source: International Herald-Tribune

BEIJING: Chinese President Hu Jintao pledged to work with U.S. President-elect Barack Obama on global issues, including the financial crisis, but also said proper handling of the Taiwan issue was key to boosting relations, state media reported Sunday.

Hu was quoted by state television and the official Xinhua News Agency as saying both countries should respect each other's concerns and handle sensitive issues properly, "particularly the Taiwan issue."

Hu said China wanted to maintain high-level exchanges with the United States and continue the strategic dialogues the countries have on economic and political issues.

Earlier this month, China's defense minister demanded that the U.S. cancel a $6.5 billion arms sale to Taiwan, saying it created "obstacles" in relations between Beijing and Washington. The arms package included Patriot III missiles, Apache helicopters and parts for F-16 jet fighters.

1. President-Elect Obama, take away their "most favored nation status."
China is our biggest enemy.

2. How about this for a compromise?
We lighten up on the Taiwan issue and China restores Tibet's religious autonomy. Sounds reasonable.

3. I don't think we should lighten up on the Taiwan issue
it is an independent nation (and a democracy to boot) and China should acknowledge this and back off.

I also have qualms with calling anyone the "president" of china. They were elected fairly, expressing the will of the majority, sure.

Looks like everyone around the world is putting their request in...

On edit...by "lighten up", I don't mean let them takeover. I just mean encourage negotiations.

6. If he wants to cooperate ...

If he wants to cooperate, he'll stop pegging his currency to the dollar.

If we want to help ourselves, we'll "renegotiate" international trade agreements with the understanding that we will unilaterally withdraw if they aren't to our satisfaction.
