Deutsche Post ready to cut (between 12,000 and 13,000) jobs, costs in US
Source: Associated Press

By JOACHIM SONDERMANN

BONN, Germany (AP) - Deutsche Post AG is poised to announce thousands of job cuts at its DHL Express operations in the United States, possibly as early as Monday, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press.

The person said on condition of anonymity Sunday that the Bonn-based express mail and logistics company was poised to announce that the cutbacks at its DHL operations in the United States would affect between 12,000 and 13,000 jobs. The person was not authorized to speak to the media.

The cuts are part of a wider plan to curtail operations in the U.S., including ground deliveries, and would likely affect drivers, shipping clerks and warehouse workers. The express unit employs some 18,000 workers.

The expected move will not signal Deutsche Post's exit from the U.S., where it faces strident competition from UPS Inc. and FedEx Corp. (FDX)

4. It's easily done -
duplicating I mean. I seem to manage to to do it at least once a week myself - mainly due to USA/UK timing differences.

9. More than likely UPS and Fedex will take up what was..........
....left of their market share. They are probably leaving the US domestic market because of declining traffic due to the recession and most importantly steadily declining industrial base also. I worked for more than 30 yrs in the transportation business before I retired in 2001. Used to be a good sector for decent paying jobs, not so much anymore. Oh, I used to work for Consolidated Freightways (CF) one of the biggest truck lines in the US at the time of their bankruptcy in 2002.

11. I became a trucker in 1996
And I remember CF as being a desireable place to work if you were a trucker. Every once in a while I'll see one of their old pup trailers abandonded in a lot or being used as a storage trailer.

12. Yes. For a "union" truck line it was indeed a good place to work.
I am now a retired Teamster living on a moderate, but for my wife and myself, an entirely adequate pension. Over the years I worked for numerous union outfits, and CF by far treated their employees the best.

13. Yep, 9500 here and 9500 there and pretty soon you end up with 524,000 (in 2 months).
