Secret Service Officer Arrested In Prostitution Sting

Washington, D.C. (WUSA) -- A Secret Service officer was arrested early Saturday during a prostitution sting conducted by D.C. police in Northwest.

Inspector Brian Bray, commander of Metropolitan Police Department's Narcotics and Special Investigations Division (NSID), says his squad was conducting a prostitution sting in the area of 11th and K Sts NW around 12:50 a.m. when a marked Secret Service Uniformed Division patrol car stopped to speak with an undercover female officer who was posing as a prostitute.

The patrol car was driven by a Uniformed Division sergeant who was in uniform. Insp. Bray said the NSID officers assumed he was going to tell the undercover female officer to leave the area.

But the sergeant allegedly engaged the female officer in dialog, mentioned how attractive she was, and inquired about what sex acts she would perform. They agreed on a price of $20 and he drove around the corner to meet with her.

That is when he was arrested by D.C. police officers. The sergeant was taken to the 1st District police station where he was processed and charged with solicitation for the purpose of prostitution. Insp. Bray says that is a misdemeanor.

is 'misfeasance'. It's generally punished as an infraction.

If prostitution was legal, his punishment would likely be internal. Suspension or, more likely, dismissal.

I don't think either action should be a crime, but I'd support this guy losing his job.

I know a police officer here is Miami who does this type of undercover work every few weeks. She is an ok looking middle aged woman, but she does herself up to look like a crack addict.

11. EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. This is exactly the sort of "weak link" that results in a President's death.

Foreign spy agencies and organizations that seek to do us and our country's leaders harm look for these "weak links" all the time. What if it was not the D.C. police that caught this guy, but a foreign agency or group that then sought to blackmail this agent. This guy needs to be FIRED IMMEDIATELY and taken off any Presidential detail or privvy to any sensitive information.

wear uniforms? I've only seen them wear business suits with those squiggy wire things coming out of their collars.
Maybe this guy was looking to unload some counterfeit currency, they do that job, too, ya know!

Aside from wearing the appropriate insignia or putting two and two together from the location you saw them at, you'd probably confuse them with ordinary cops at a glance in any of the areas they're serving. The ones who look like police are in a unit explicitly called the Uniformed Division; the suits are special agents, who operate outside of that structure.

Loth though I generally am to refer people to Wikipedia, their article on the United States Secret Service (right here) shows the difference in appearance between the two.

I'm trying to figure out if I should be pleased or disappointed that they no longer use the ridiculously ornate formal uniforms that Nixon made 'em wear abroad..

16. Not all of the SS is involved in presidential protection

Their primary mission is still counterfeiting, there's a seperate division of them who are closer to conventional police in Washington and, I believe, a few other areas, etc. There's also additional ones involved in embassy protection overseas. The list goes on.

There's four or five thousand of these guys; only a fraction of them are involved in presidential protection and I'd guess the selection process for those guys is considerably more intense than I can easily imagine. Uniformed Division guys are usually more about landmark security than personal security (guarding embassies, the Naval Observatory, etc).

...is that one's conduct mustn't expose one to blackmail. As said upthread, this is how security breaches happen and widen.
