Iranian parliament to probe Obama letter
Source: UPI

TEHRAN, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- A congratulatory letter sent by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Barack Obama has triggered an investigation by Iran's parliament, lawmakers say.

Ahmadinejad's Thursday letter to the U.S. president-elect, in which he urged Obama to be a "good president," will be probed by the Majlis, or Iranian parliament, the state-backed Press TV reported Monday.

It quoted Hamid-Reza Haji-Babaei, a member of the Majlis Presiding Board, as saying, "Obviously the Majlis is very concerned about the president's letter to Obama and will examine the issue within the coming days."

The Iranian broadcaster said Ahmadinejad's congratulatory missive has turned into a major issue for members of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, which is set to address it after lawmakers introduce the topic during an open session.

As they processed this information, and tried to deduce which 'side' they are supposed to take in order to best make Obama look bad ...

4. i don't get it
why would the Majlis launch an investigation? It was just a congratulatory letter from a head of state to a newly-elected president. . Never mind the fact that Ahmadinejad is bat-shit crazy. This is one of the few decent things he's done. I also thought that even tho' the Majlis is filled with Islamic fundamentalists who didn't like the US, they at least had some diplomatic grace. I just don't understand Iran. There are so many conflicting messages coming out of that country. They held a large spontaneous vigil for us after 9/11. Bush's policies since then pissed them off, causing an extremist like Ahmadinejad to come into power. Yet, there are many aspects of American culture that they like and I've heard that the population (at least in Tehran) is not particularly hostile to the people of the US.

Edited on Mon Nov-10-08 12:46 PM by dee_from_ott
Maybe they suspect he inscripted a coded message in the letter?

That'd be pretty cool. But I assume they're just paranoid.

9. Iran: Anti-riot drills taking place in Tehran

Tehran, 10 Nov. (AKI) - More than 30,000 police agents and members of the security forces were expected to take part in a series of anti-riot drills in the Iranian capital, Tehran, from Monday. During the drills, eight roads will be closed to traffic to facilitate the movement of the security forces over the next week.

The drills' aim was for the country to "be ready to confront the psychological aggression of the enemy," said recently ousted Interior Minister Ali Kordan.

psychological aggression of the enemy eh... inciting riots and protests? The enemy in this context being who.. the U.S.A.? I think it's because of this survey:http://www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/main.jhtml?xml=/opinion/2008/11/06/do0607.xml claiming Iranian youth would back Obama. I guess that constitutes "psychological aggression"

"Kordan was impeached on Tuesday after admitting he lied about a fake degree from a top British university."

Lol!

Iran's youths would back Barack Obama over Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/main.jhtml?xml=/opinion/2008/11/06/do0607.xml

Most disturbing to the mullahs would be the rise of another JFK being warmly greeted by their own sons and daughters after a generation of 'the great satan' hate speak indoctrination.

10. Just more proof
That Ahmedinejad has no real temporal power. Fuck the dude's getting the inquisition on his ass for writing a letter, and people think he's going to try to launch missiles at something?

11. talk to Iran?
Barack Obama will talk to the axis of evil?

My personal experience firmly confirms that average Iranians are the opposite of US-haters.
And yet given the little "direct" contact between Americans and average Iranians, its hard to see what makes people in the US thinking of Iran in terms of the axis of evil other than the concept of axis of evil and the memory of those roughly 60 years old and who were involved somehow.
All this politics is of course not limited to the Middle-East but at least in this case, one can ask who is the one making sense of the nonsense and earning money out of it!

12. I think the mullah's are worried sick about even the
remotest possibility that a US President would be willing to sit down and talk to them. The main calling card for the mullah's is "The Great Satan" to sell to the people. Take that away and what do they have? Not much... a miserable economy and very, very few personal freedoms, now that's a frightening thought to base your regime on once the specter of the boogey man is taken away.

and they test new missiles along the Iraqi border. They must weed out the spies that are going to complain about inflation.
It is their sacred duty to obey the mullahs as the 'great satan' forces the price of oil ever lower.
