Local Student (SW PA) Attacked After Fight Over Election
Source: KDKA TV

A West Allegheny High School student says a group of kids went to his house and beat him up because of the candidate he supported in the election.

The fight started in a biology class at West Allegheny High School the day after the election and ended at the home of an African American family two days later.

At issue was the election of Barack Obama.

In school, both this student and another student got an in-school suspension for their altercation, but it didn't end there.

The victim and his mother, who did not want to be identified, say a group of teens came to their house to start a fight.

"So then two kids came to my door and one asked for some water. So I went downstairs, said, 'OK,' you know, got him a water and soon as I came by the door, they opened up my door and nine to 10 people … ran into my house and just started jumping," the student tells KDKA.

1. Is home invasion a felony in Pennsylvania?
Charge them as adults. This was a premeditated assault.

2. A kid came to the door and asked for some water. Huh!?!? WTF
This sounds really weird.

Do kids in your neighborhood come to the door and ask for water?

3. These kids were carrying an argument from school 2 this kid's home. The request 4 water was a lure.
The victim knew his attackers; this wasn't a random attack. If someone I knew came to my door asking for water, I'd probably fetch them some water too. And so would you.

5. I understood all of that, but it seems pretty weird to me, all the same. If my kid
had been suspended from school for fighting about Obama and a kid came to the door and ASKED ME FOR WATER I think I'd be more than a bit suspicious.

6. Well, I didn't say it wasn't odd but if I may take liberties with an old expression...
Familiarity breeds complacency.

9. In School Suspension (ISS) is not suspended from school. Students still go to school, but
they are confined to one classroom for the length of the In School Suspension. The students are required to do their regular classroom assignments as well as extra work.

There is no talking permitted and it is generally an uncomfortable atmosphere (rooms kept quite cold, and they are sterile) to discourage students from acting in such a way as to get more ISS.

11. Yeah, I'd think twice as well. But regardless, if this is true, put the little thugs
away for a long time.

8. What was discussed on the radio this morning from host
Marty Griffin who talked to the mother was in school an angry discussion broke out about the election. The white kids were saying the "N" word. The black kid got upset and tipped over a table. Then another table was tipped over breaking a female student's toe.

The guys who came to the house were supposedly white members of the football team.

We'll see how it plays out tomorrow.

4. Then there is the guy in Pulaski Township that is flying his flag upside down in protest
of the election. Rambo, don't you sometimes wonder about some of the people around here?

7. His flag was stolen tonight
PULASKI TOWNSHIP (KDKA) ― A Pulaski Township man who was protesting the election of Barack Obama by flying his American flag upside down is upset after someone stole it.

Larry DeBaker decided to fly his flag upside down because he says he's worried about the country's direction.

"I had my doubt on whether it was right or wrong, you know, but through the experience of it all, I'm sorry as an American I find that it's crazy that if you express your opinion," he said.

He says he's got phone calls from dozens of people who are both for and against his protest.

"I think it's disrespectful to the flag and to the country – I think he could have found a better way to protest if he wanted to,' an area resident tells KDKA.

And we had this other story today:

School aide suspended for remarks to student about Obama
Tuesday, November 11, 2008
By Anya Sostek, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The A.W. Beattie Career Center has suspended an instructional aide for "unprofessional and unacceptable" comments about President-elect Barack Obama.

The comments were made Thursday after a 16-year-old student expressed enthusiasm about Mr. Obama's victory in the presidential election.

"Several of the comments attempted to describe, in a supposedly joking fashion, alleged social changes that would occur with Mr. Obama as president," said the release.

The student's mother, Mara Gilligan, said that the aide told her biracial daughter that Mr. Obama was going to be shot and killed, the U.S. flag would be changed to the KFC flag, and the national anthem would be changed to "Moving On Up."

No surprise - area is a hotbed of hate radio, Dicky Mellon Scaife's hate rag, and several of the counties here were the only ones in PA to vote in a greater percentage for McCain than for Bush.

10. racist Western Pa.
This is so sad to me, as I really thought it had changed there. I am a retired electrician that marched in the sixties to protest about no black members of my own union. As you can imagine, I took some abuse about it. My reasons back then were pragmatic, as it seemed stupid to me to fight the feds over integration, which was a losing battle. Little did I know that deep inside somehow lived a bigger truth, it was just wrong. We got black members, they got educated and became workers just like everyone else. I had the first black apprentice in my local, a college educated man learning to be an electrician. To this day he insists that I am blacker then he ever was. I take that as a compliment, I guess. My favorite response is that all of us humans are 99.9999 percent genetically the same, 2 percent from apes, and only a little more different then a plant. What is wrong with these people? Don't they know that the calendar changed and it is now the 21st century?
