14. Ummm...no. We would pick up his senate seat and possibly hold
it for decades. Arizona is changing.

2. Appoint him to something
He should be appointed as Veterans' Affairs director or something. It would be gracious, symbolic, and McCain couldn't refuse.

Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer, as they say.

5. I don't see McCain as an "enemy" ...
... more like a undisciplined, whipped (by Bushco) and confused old man, who thinks he means well but really is out of touch with reality.

20. Then what ? Lieberman ?, Clinton ?, Palin ?, ....
How about Cindy S, It's not like she's a Republican.

I'm cool with a reach across the aisle, It's something Obama wants
but there's been tremendous damage done to our government institutions
which MUST be reversed.

These things should be priority, Not the hurt feelings of the Clinton's
Bush's, Lieberman's or other vanquished political enemies.

America First, Feelings second.

21. No - this could be brilliant
You appointment McCain to the VA, he'll take it of course (how could he refuse given his "Country First" rhetoric?).

Then the Democratic Arizona governor gets to name the replacement. Voila. 60-seat D majority.

Then if McCain strays off the VA ranch, he's fired.

Win win all around.

23. I agree, this could be a great strategic move
Any other R senators in similar situations, where the replacement process would almost certainly be with a Dem?

If so, Obama should give them ALL cabinet positions! Let's tie this thing up now while we can, and in the process, tie Lieberman's hands once and for all!

25. Except AZ state law mandates that...
... the replacement senator be from the same party as the departing one.
Thus, if McCain leaves before his term is up (2010) Napolitano would have to appoint a Republican.
