Conservatives Plan Offensive on Obama’s Judicial Nominees
Source: NYTimes

When about 20 leading members of the conservative movement met last week at the Virginia home of one of their top strategists, they did more than hold a post-election support group.

They settled on the issue that a majority of the members of the informal think tank agreed would be their first major project and, perhaps, the key to galvanizing the right — a full-throated and well-financed assault on President-elect Obama’s approach to judicial nominations.

According to several people who will help lead the effort, conservatives were frustrated that the McCain campaign did not make more out of Mr. Obama’s pledge during the campaign to appoint judges to the bench based on their “sound judgment and empathy.”

Members of the group, who view Mr. Obama’s reference to “empathy” as a sign that the new president plans to seed the courts with judicial activists, are in the initial stages of planning a counter-push that they say will be every bit as aggressive as the fight to confirm John Roberts and Samuel Alito.

...

“There are lot of conservatives out there who are casting about for a sense of purpose — a way of adding value in our political culture,” Mr. Leo said in an interview. “And this is an issue that the American people care deeply about. It’s a gateway issue in so far as it affects so many facets of American life.”

1. I'm glad the Democratic leadership fucked us for decades with Alito and Roberts.
That was a good plan we had in place.

5. It more more than just Alito & Roberts
it was Thomas and Scalia and damn near every other extremist the Republicans ever nominated.

Special thanks over the past 6 years go to:

The astonishingly ineffectual Harry Reid and to:

* Joe Lieberman of Connecticut
* Robert Byrd of West Virginia
* Ben Nelson of Nebraska
* Mary Landrieu of Louisiana
* Daniel Inouye of Hawaii
* Mark Pryor of Arkansas
* Ken Salazar of Colorado
========

Heck of a job, Brownies.

3. Still waiting to learn when we can expect the next Justice Sunday to be held
I fully expect all of these fundamentalist Christians to help the new President get his judges confirmed.

That, after all, is what patriotism is all about.

4. Boy that'll get the electorate all fired up *AGAIN* so close to an election
an election in which your side got crushed as your "ideals" came to full fruition right in everyone's face (and wallets)

Yeah great plan there guys!! Keep up the good work!! Maybe you can latch onto Palin's STAR POWER and have her tour the country discussing Constitutional law.

6. The only thing in error here is the verb. CONservatives don't PLAN an offensive.
Edited on Fri Nov-14-08 05:12 PM by calimary
They ARE offensive. Period.

Here's another scenario that requires all of US to stand up and get LOUD and make sure the bad guys all know their place: AT THE BACK OF THE LINE. They need to be reminded - ELECTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES. We had to cope with that, too, dear CONservative LOSERS. Now it's YOUR turn, my friends.

8. Obama's sleeves filled with tricks
I have a feeling that we all are going to be surprised by some of the Cabinet choices Obama is going to make, and appointments to the Cabinet are going to provide the first inklings of what he is thinking about the Supreme Court. So far, the only name I've heard tossed about is Hillary Clinton, but the rumor mills also have her pegged as a possible Secretary of State.

Regardless, Repug plans at this point are no more advanced than threatening to hold one's breath unless Momma relents and gives you a cookie. Any general will tell you that it's useless to plan a battle until you have an idea of your enemy, and the Repugs don't.

9. They have one thing now that they didn't have
when Bill Clinton submitted Justices Breyer and Ginsberg. There are suitable numbers of wingnuts hooked up on the Internet. We saw how they used that to railroad their congresscritters into voting for impeachment.

We saw how they used it to stay in the White House for the last eight years. If it hadn't been for the economy really tanking a couple of months ago, they might still be in power with it. It's a powerful fear and hate mongering tool.

10. Fine. Democrats should use the 'nuclear option' then.
And if 'centrist' Republicans want to agree to approve 99.9% of Obama's candidates, we won't use the nuclear option.

Just like when the Retards held power.

14. Democrats have a whole lot of majority leverage now - great for
persuasion when the minority wants something done for a local constituency.

16. Could be a mistake on their part.
You start messing with a majority - and at this point, highly popular - President, a party in the majority in both Houses, and Rahm Emanuel, you may get more than you bargain for.

Rove was a sneaky, smarmy little fuck who would stab you in the back.

Emanuel will stick it up their asses and tell them while he's doing it. That's my hope, anyway.

The guys trying this shit might find all kinds of unpleasant things happening to them.

I want to see McCain/Palin buttons and chunks of Repubs in his stools!

You lost the House of Reps., the Senate, the White House, your whole base is tearing at the seams, and you still think you sway a judicial nomination. Obama will pick a intelligent and fair new Judges, and whether you like them or not, you can't do Jack shit about it. No one likes you, and no one's listening to you.
