Chilling Note From a Student: Classmates With Guns Talk of Shooting Obama

NEW YORK -- Here at E&P, starting over a week ago, we have been chronicling local anti-Obama incidents, many far from the national spotlight, usually involving racist attacks of a verbal, physical or even criminal nature. We are following this largely from the Web pages of smaller daily or weekly newspapers.

A few days ago, the Associated Press and some other news outlets picked up on the disturbing. But at Editor & Publisher we are still receiving tips and personal accounts every day, often from small towns in both red and blue states.

Just this morning, for example, the Mount Desert Island in Maine reported that a third effigy of a black man had been found hanging from a tree in the area since the election. This was was in Somesville, following reports of others in Tremont and Bar Harbort. The paper observes: "State police also are investigating the incidents, which are believed to be in response to the election of Sen. Barack Obama as president."

Here is the latest note to us today from a student in Iowa (I have her name and address but won't release it here), a state Obama carried rather easily. It is much in line with reported incidents of other school kids, some as young as 7 or 8, talking about "assassinating" Obama. Of course, they couldn't carry that out themselves but what is chilling is that they are likely just repeating language or threats they hear at home.

12. I have the strongest suspicions about the good faith of the publishers,

who find the rantings of 7 and 8 year olds from redneck families appropriate fare for national consumption among adults. It was surely predictable. It would have been news, if they hadn't.

Let the police and, if necessary, the courts (for the parents) take care of this quietly and firmly, and the rest of us not run around like a chickens with their heads cut off, because certain news organs, for thir own purposes, peddle this literally infantile news.

Imo, it's playing the Republicans' game. They will be behind this. They won't have liked the evidence that racism failed to influence the voters, so they're trying to fan the embers with kids' nonsense. Could be too costly for adults to try it and be caught, however "softly softly" that particular judge was on the pin-heads with the sniper's rifles.

I always thought that were a non-white man elected to POTUS this would happen. All the nutters would come out of the wood work and profane America for slighting their racist beliefs.

This is a good thing. Now we know where these miserable ticks are and we can now begin cauterizing the asshats with extreme prejudice. They need to be exposed before their local communities and publicly humiliated for their vile, old-world, hate. I hope more come out of the wood work... we, as a nation, need to confront this and finally stamp out racism once and for all.
