The purge: GOP pushed out on K Street

As the K Street partisan shuffle continues with major Democratic hires and headline-grabbing merger announcements, some firms need to do just a quick half-step or two to turn from red to blue.

Take the case of Timmons and Co., one of the oldest lobbying shops in town.

Founder William E. Timmons had been tapped by Republican presidential nominee John McCain to chair his transition team.

A veteran of the Nixon administration, Timmons is so familiar with what’s required in a transition that he sent a report to the Bush-Cheney team in 2000 that included how many paper clips they’d need.

But with McCain’s loss to Democrat Barack Obama, Timmons’ transition files are now tucked away and the office buzz has shifted to the room next door.

That office belongs to Martin Paone, the firm’s chairman and a soft-spoken, extraordinarily well-connected former Democratic secretary of the Senate.

and the Permanent Republican Majority was Rove.
