BREAKING: Franken Gains on Coleman Again on Day 2 of U.S. Senate Race Hand Count in MN
Margin Between Two Shrinks to 129 Votes as Number of Challenged Ballots Grows Official GOP
Website Continues Baseless Claims of 'Stolen' Election...

With just over 40% of the ballots in Minnesota's U.S. Senate race between incumbent Republican Sen. Norm Coleman and Democrat Al Franken, the gap has now shrunk to just 129 votes at the end of the second day of counting.

According to tonight's update of the MN Secretary of State's "recount" webpage, Coleman has so far lost a total of 212 votes and Franken has lost 126 during the counting. The net gain is 86 votes for Franken out of the original 215 vote advantage certified by the state for Coleman before counting began yesterday...

1. I really, really, really hope Franken wins. Not just because he's Dem,
but because he's both a) incredibly serious about this country, and b) incredibly sarcastic and hilarious, and c) intelligent beyond comprehension.

Anything he does will be brilliant, but also possibly with a most wonderfully sarcastic bit of indifference toward Republicans.

And, because Coleman's a shitbag.

2. Oh dear and think how he's going to break them up in the Senate.
Also, it will be fun to have Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity have to call him Senator Franken.

11. That is exactly why a friend of mine did NOT vote for him this month
She thought his sarcasm was inappropriate. I think Coleman's underhandedness is inappropriate and welcome Franken's smart-ass attitude. Whatever. She voted Indy.

3. If the math keeps up they will end exactly tied.
Think about it...86 votes equals 40%.
86 + 86 = 172. That gets us to 80%
Half of 40% is 20%, so half of 86 = 43.
172 + 43 = 215...the original deficit Franken faced.

This is gonna be a squeaker.

4. If this recount proceeded at the same percent rate gain, they would be exactly tied
Of course that won't happen. But this could be so close, that who ever loses will be filing lawsuits and wanting a second recount. I have to give the edge to Coleman because it would seem the more rural counties would be counted last which would favor Coleman. It will be heartbreaking for Franken to lose this close, but he's a class act and will take it like a man. On the other hand, Coleman and his republican cohorts will fall on the ground kicking and screaming and shouting election theft if they lose.

5. urban votes are slower

Usually rural votes come in first, urban votes more slowly. That is why Republicans often have early leads in races they eventually lose.

7. I've updated the item...
...to include some re-reprinted advice for whoever comes out the "loser" from the hand count. Just FYI.

8. interesting- here in chicago, where all elections are crooked
(kidding) they make us count out ALL the ballots, unvoted, spoiled, and voted. brad mentions this as something that does not seem to be required.

10. I did the math... if Franken keeps the same rate f gain on Coleman...
40% of votes counted gives him 86 votes, then a full 100% recount would give him 215 votes, ie an EXACT TIE!

12. Here's an article about the recount with pictures of contested ballots and a poll on each of them.

Maybe it's just because I'm still fairly young and just about out of college, but I just don't understand how anyone can screw up the vote. Voting is too important to screw up.

13. I'm confused. I saw earlier on Rachel Maddow that Coleman was ahead by 53 to 47.
What's going on here?
