China reiterates opposition to Dalai Lama
Source: Reuters

BEIJING (Reuters) - China on Tuesday reiterated its opposition to what it says are the "splittist" activities of Tibet's spiritual leader the Dalai Lama in its first reaction to a meeting of Tibetan exiles last week. "China's position is consistent and clear. We oppose the Dalai getting involved in activities overseas to split China, and we oppose any foreign leaders having any contact with the Dalai," Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told a news conference.

Over the weekend, Tibetan exiles decided to stick to the Dalai Lama's "Middle Way" approach to China, abandoning the dream of an independent Tibet in favor of seeking greater autonomy within China through dialogue.

"We have talked about this issue many times in the past," Qin said, referring to the exiles' meeting, and without elaborating.

China has already rejected the Dalai Lama's demands for greater autonomy as being part of a covert plot for independence.

1. The story of Tibet makes me very sad
and despite all this talk of "freedom" and "not talking to dictators" Tibet remains an occupied nation, and no one really seems to care that much, as long as they can get cheap crap from Wal-mart.

2. Tibet
I too am saddened by the situation in Tibet. The world and world leaders would care if Tibet had: Oil, natural gas, significant mineral deposits, coal or any other commodity that can be exploited. But alas, the heart of Tibet is it's people and their devotion to the spiritual & sacred.

3. "Splittism"?
the only thing that will make china free tibet is an awakening to the injustice of it in china. currently the chinese populace believes their government media - that the dalai "lies", that tibet has always been part of china - witness the vehement but utterly ignorant protests by chinese in america that greeted the dalai on his recent american tour. the rest of the planet cannot force them to do what is right.

at some point, possibly a 100, 500 years from now, they will.
