Say what you want about Kerry, but thank God he's not Zell Miller...

Miller bill would fight Ten Commandments rulings

The Associated Press
Published on: 02/12/04

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Zell Miller, whose fiscal conservative viewpoints have long irked fellow Democrats, revealed a social conservative side Thursday during a wide-ranging floor speech targeting what he calls a "deficit of decency."

The former Georgia governor used the 12-minute speech to endorse a constitutional amendment limiting marriage to between a man and woman and a measure to restrict the ability of federal courts to limit the public acknowledgment of God.

Federal courts could not curb state court rulings that allow an "acknowledgment of God," according to a measure Miller and another senator introduced Thursday as a response to the dispute over a Ten Commandments display in Alabama.

"I think it's a good time to have a debate on it," said Miller. "We'll run it up the flag pole and see how many salute."

5. I saw this speech on CSPAN today...it was DISGUSTING
I couldn't BELIEVE the garbage I was hearing coming out of his mouth. It was the most right-wing, hateful spew I've heard coming out of ANYONE'S mouth in a LONG time. He sounded worse than Rush, Savage and Santorum put together. It was truly unbelievable.

Anyone who can get ahold of the speech and listen to it or watch it should. It'll blow your mind that anyone, especially a Democrat, could be so ignorant and nasty.

11. Give the guy some credit
after the Jeffords switch he stayed with the party when his leaving would have handed back control. He stayed loyal when it counted. He also campaigned for Cleland although it didn't help. He's a lame duck so it doesn't really matter what he says now. GA is a lost cause for us with or without Zell. This is a non-issue.

The DNC was able to keep Lyndon LaRouche out of recognition, and some past President (was it Franklin Pierce? I can't really remember.) was burned in effigy and basically cast from the Whigs. I know Zell hasn't much time but we should send him the message.

16. Full Text at Salon....."A deficit of decency"
Editor's note: Following is the full text of remarks prepared for delivery on the Senate floor by Zell Miller, D-Ga. The remarks originally appeared on Miller's Web site on Feb. 12.

<snip>Does any responsible adult ever listen to the words of this rap crap? I'd quote you some of it, but the sergeant of arms would throw me out of here, as well he should. And then there was that prancing, dancing, strutting, rutting guy evidently suffering from jock itch because he kept yelling and grabbing his crotch. But then, maybe there's a crotch-grabbing culture I'm unaware of.

But as bad as all this was, the thing that yanked my chain the hardest was seeing that ignoramus with his pointed head stuck up through a hole he had cut in the flag of the United States of America, screaming about having "a bottle of scotch and watching lots of crotch." Think about that.

This is the same flag that we pledge allegiance to. This is the flag that is draped over coffins of dead young uniformed warriors killed while protecting Kid Crock's bony butt. He should be tarred and feathered and ridden out of this country on a rail. Talk about a good reality show, there's one for you.

The desire and will of this Congress to meaningfully do anything about any of these so-called social issues is nonexistent and embarrassingly disgraceful. The American people are waiting and growing impatient with us. They want something done.<snip>

If you desecrate one as a paid promoter of the NFL/Military Industrial Complex it's called patriotism.

If you desecrate one as a protestor against a crappy president, its called treason.

49. We gotta stop the back biting
I personally found the whole half-time show repulsive. I was just glad that Kid Rock didn't throw it to the ground. At least he handed it off.

But, Miller is old time Democrat. He has the Democrat values my parent's hold. My parents (who are Yankees) agree with him on nearly every point.

I now live in the south where family values and patriotism is a big issue. We need to find a way to reach out to the moderates that could be major swing votes. The attitude that "we don't need the south" won't wash. If Gore had carried his own home southern state, FL would have been a non-issue.

If Democrats want to win, they have to be the compassionate party not the mirror image of the Republicans. Fighting against each other is the last thing we should do.

23. I'm sorry, when did the Confederacy reemerge?
That man's a loon.

"Yes, there's a deficit to be concerned about -- a deficit of decency. So, as the sand empties through my hourglass at warp speed -- and with my time running out in this Senate and on this earth, I feel compelled to speak out. For I truly believe that at times like this, silence is not golden. It is yellow."

:crazy:That's insane! It's like he put a bunch of awful metaphors (and a great Dylan line) into a blender and hit pureé.

"I'm not talking just about an exposed mammary gland with a pull-tab attached to it," Miller said. "Does any responsible adult ever listen to the words of this rap-crap? I'd quote you some of it, but the sergeant of arms would throw me out of here, as well he should."

:crazy:Pull-tab? How does Miller know the technical term for that?

"And then there was that dancing, prancing, strutting, rutting guy evidently suffering from jock itch because he kept yelling and grabbing his crotch," Miller said. "But then, maybe there's a culture of crotch in this country that I don't know about."

:crazy:OMFG HE JUST SAID CULTURE OF CROTCH! HE'S FUCKING INSANE!

...every state, not just the South. And these people have been aided and abetted by the NeoCon Junta since they took over in December 2000. Their fanatical religio-cultural beliefs drive everything that they do, to include conducting an illegal and immoral war in the Middle East.

"Insane"? Yes, indeed. What makes it worse is that they are in control and know it.

28. I'm reminded of something Thomas Jefferson said.
Patrick Henry (best remembered for saying "give me liberty or give me death") was strongly in favour of establishment of official state-sanctioned religion in Virginia in the 1780's. In a letter to James Madison, Jefferson said (approximate quote) "it seems to me that the best thing we can do is pray devoutly for his death."

loathsome and is the perfect example of whats wrong with Washington. How did so many extremists and "religious" nutcases manage to gather into positions of power anyway, they really are NOT reflective of American. He has gone way over the line and deserves so kind of punishment from the Party, can't they strip him of money and perks that he is sucking off of? I think there may be a backlash against his ravings, he really has lost his mind.

I seem to remember US Civics being a requirement in school back in the 60’s…..are they even teaching it anymore?
