Mumbai attackers may be Pakistani nationals
Source: times of india

MUMBAI: Preliminary investigations on Thursday pointed to involvement of at least some Pakistani nationals in the serial terror attacks in Mumbai
that left over 100 dead and 270 others injured.

"There are indications that the perpetrators of the crime, who arrived in Mumbai by boats, are Pakistani nationals," authoritative sources said.

1. 'the perpetrators of the crime, who arrived in Mumbai by boats' - I wonder how they know that?
How do they know how they arrived if they don't know who exactly these people are?

23. They were showing one of the dingies on TV all day....
People in Mumbai SAW them pull up and suspiciously
unload large boxes. They told the police...but an
hour later, the terrorists had already begun their
attack at Leopold's and the Taj.

4. LeT terrorist Ismail arrested in Mumbai
Edited on Thu Nov-27-08 05:27 AM by sfexpat2000
The Mumbai police secured a major breakthrough into Wednesday night's terror strikes with the arrest of Ismail, a key Lashkar e Tayiba operative, from one of the locations that came under attack in the city.

A hither-to unknown outfit, the Deccan Mujahideen , had claimed responsibility for the terror attacks.

More than 100 people have been killed, and 300 injured, in the terror attacks.
Further details are awaited.

5. See here for "hither-to unknown outfit"
Accusing Mumbai Police’s ATS of harassing Muslims, Indian Mujahideen said in its email that it was closely watching the ATS.

“You should know that your acts are not at all left unnoticed; rather we are closely keeping an eye on you and just waiting for the right time to execute your bloodshed. We are aware of your recent raids at Ansarnagar, Mograpada in Andheri and the harassment and trouble you created there for the Muslims,” the group said in the email they sent to various media houses on Saturday evening.

“You threatened to murder them and your mischief went to such an extent that you even dared to abuse and insult Maulana Mahmood-ul-Hasan Qasmi and even misbehaved with the Muslim women and children there,” the email said.

“If this is the degree your arrogance has reached, and if you think that by these stunts you can scare us, then let the Indian Mujahideen warn all the people of Mumbai that whatever deadly attacks Mumbaikars will face in future, their responsibility would lie with the Mumbai ATS and their guardians – Vilasrao Deshmukh and R R Patil,” the email said. “You are already on our hit-list and this time very very seriously.”

It appears to be the case that the Mumbai police were forewarned.

19. There is no comparison between South Asia and Iraq
US forces cannot handle Iraq with a population of less than 28 million. India/ Pakistan / Bangladesh - have more than 1.4 billion.

Something to think about before getting entangled in this mess.

9. Pakistani president's statement:
1137 The president of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, has spoken of the need for strong measures to eradicate terrorism and extremism following the Mumbai attacks. His Prime Minister, Yousuf Raza Gilani, has meanwhile called for concerted efforts to make the region a peaceful place to live. Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has said the attacks showed that terrorists were trying to destabilise democracy by targeting an important centre of the Indian economy.

1145 Jason Burke, a Pakistan-based journalist and expert on Islamist militants, tells BBC World News that its "too early" to tell whether the attacks were carried out by a foreign group, as India's prime minister has said. "It's not uncommon after such attacks that the Indian government blames terrorists from Pakistan," he says. "Pakistan is likely to respond and we could see a very nasty diplomatic crisis coming out of this which is what the group behind the attacks wanted to provoke."

17. Indian History
Am I wrong in thinking that Pakistan used to be part of India? I thought that Pakistan was cut off from India to get rid of the many Muslims who were Indian citizens. I have also heard that many Muslims had to leave what is now India in a pretty bloody eviction. Not exactly the kind of situation that would create good will.
I would not like to see India take military action against Pakistan. That would really be a mess, and we would probably be drawn in.

20. No, you are not wrong
atleast not totally.
India, Pakistan and Bangladesh combined was one country long time back. In 1905, the British in India, under their policy of "divide-and-rule" separated Bangladesh from India and created "East Pakistan" which later became Bangladesh. The idea was to create separate states for Hindus and Muslims, so yes, the division was based on religion. It was a somewhat peaceful migration of Hindus west of the the border to India, and the muslims migrated towards the east.
Later, in 1947, the day India and Pakistan got independence from the British, Pakistan as we know it today was created. The freedom movement of India saw the rise of two prominent politicians, Jawaharlal Nehru who headed the Indian National Congress and The Muslim League was headed by Jinnah. Both wanted to be the head of a country. Mahatma Gandhi had some role in messing things up (though this is controversial) by promising Head-of-State to both. Also, Muslims never wanted to assimilate with Hindus. Seeing no way out of the mess, the British offered partition. Both countries accepted, though Gandhi was vehemently opposed to it. India became a secular nation, while both Pakistan and Bangladesh maintained their "islamic nation" status. Migration of Hindus to India and Muslims from India started and property exchanges became common. The bloodbath was of unimaginable magnitude. Trains of migrants would arrive at stations full of beheaded bodies.
Jammu and Kashmir, a state in India, has a very high muslim population. Kashmir itself was also partitioned in 1947 with 35% (the muslim-dominated part) going to Pakistan. The Maharaja of Kashmir initially wanted kashmir to remain autonomous. When that was not granted, he agredd to let kashmir to be part of India in exchanged of a referendum of independence which never materialized. Pakistan wants ALL of Kashmir, so started the mess that has been going on for 60yrs now.

24. So?
If we are to believe India will "kick some Pakistani butt" now that some of the attackers have been identified as being from Pakistan, we need to remember that 15 of the 19 attackers on 9/11 were from Saudi Arabia. And did we go in and kick some "Saudi butt?"

The US media need to lose this "who did it?" mode (NPR this morning). We knew who "did it" on 9/11 but chose to invade and kick some butt of a country that was not involved at all.

Perhaps India will invade and kick some "Norwegian butt?"

Or maybe India will react opposite of what Bush did and retaliate against the real culprits?

26. Significant number of British Nationals easily got into the India
rented/leased/hijacked the 'mother boat' inside India and then picked up more 'soldiers' from Pakistan directly or waiting offshore in another boat.

Singling out British, American and Western nationals...

That's the fingerprints of an al Quaeda like cell not a typical Indian jihadi group. Also, this attack took major planning and $$$.
