Mass. Constitutional Convention adjourned until March 11
without passing any amendments :)

Was just watching on CSPAN. Looks like there'll be gay marriage in Massachusetts!

4. I understand that...
but if they already voted down three compromise measures, should we really fear that the fourth one will pass?

Personally, I think tensions will cool off a bit in the next month.

7. Pressure from Dems nationally will force compromise or no Dem Pres.
I am afraid that the stakes for the Democratic party are vote against gay marriage/pro-civil unions in Mass, or lose to Bush this year. No way Dem can carry needed swing states if Bush can make gay marriage a big issue. On the other hand, adoption of Mass constitional "compromise" amendment will result in other states not giving full faith and credit to Mass. gay marriages between 2004-06.

8. I don't see it...
from what I've seen, there is not strong support nationally for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

9. Enough "swing" voters care about it to throw the election to Bush

10. well what do you base that on?
Edited on Fri Feb-13-04 12:44 AM by Dookus
if the polls show general opposition to the amendment, it shows the DEMS are on the right side. Why wouldn't THEY get the swing voters?

edit: according to an ABC poll, only 38% support amending the constitutiona and 58% are opposed. I don't see how this hurts the Dems.

5. There will definitely be gay marriage in Massachusetts.
No matter how fast they move, it will take more than 2 years to amend the state constitution.

6. Today's marriages in SF will have big repercussions.
The landscape may look very different by March 11. The genie's coming out of the bottle very fast.

Too early to tell what the fallout will be from today's 87 marriages, or the *EXPLOSION* of marriages likely to happen this weekend in San Francisco, as gays from all over the West Coast take a little Valentine's Day field trip...

De-certifying hundreds of marriages *with children* may be a much tougher PR move than most conservatives realize.

You can expect the major news media to be hopping all over SF with personal interest stories this weekend.

12. so you keep saying
but what do you have to base that on?

As I noted upthread, only 38% of Americans support amending the constitution to ban gay marriages. 58% oppose it.

Why the hell should we back away from this fight?

13. We didn't pick the time... The time picked us!
Gay marriage is on the front burner now. It will remain so.

Sometimes you choose your battles, sometimes your battles choose you. No doubt many--even most--Democrats may wish this wasn't going to come to a head right now. Tough.

If you're afraid to fight the good fight then you don't deserve to win. Giving 3% to 10% of our country second class status is not a "compromise." It's an offense to justice.

It's begun. Progressives have to stand for what's right.
