Russia seeks new missiles due to U.S. shield plans

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia's military said on Friday it had intensified efforts to develop new ballistic missiles in response to U.S. plans to deploy an anti-missile system in Europe and Russia's navy test fired a new generation rocket.

The decision by the United States to deploy interceptor missiles in Poland and a radar system in the Czech Republic has angered Moscow, which says Russia's national security will be compromised by the U.S. anti-missile system.

Colonel-General Nikolai Solovtsov, Commander of Russia's Strategic Missile Forces, was quoted by Interfax as saying that Russia had bolstered its efforts to develop new missiles.

"At the present time, work has been intensified to create the research and technical foundation for new missile systems, which will be needed after 2020," Solovtsov said.

A few hours later, the Dmitry Donskoy nuclear submarine launched a Bulava intercontinental ballistic missile from the White Sea, a navy spokesman said. The missile hit the Kura testing site on the Kamchatka peninsula in the Pacific.

1. Violate Start?
I wonder. We have advanced designs that were never implemented under start treaties.

Is it possible for Russia's national security to be compromised by terrorism or can Russia's national security be compromised only by somebody having a defensive shield?

12. The shield is not so "defensive"
It is a missing link in the nuclear premacy or cancels MAD.

Plus, it makes US neocons think that decapitating first nuclear strike is really possible.

7. You are correct.
"After much deliberation between the Soviet Union and Kennedy's cabinet, Kennedy agreed to remove all missiles set in Turkey on the border of the Soviet Union in exchange for Khrushchev removing all missiles in Cuba."

9. Of course, the difference being...
That when the USSR put missiles in Cuba, they were missiles with NUCLEAR WARHEADS, whereas the ones we want to put into those countries are interceptor missiles. Defensive missiles. Of course, they're still foreign installations right on their back door, and I know that if I were a head of state, I wouldn't like the idea of somebody unilaterally putting missiles up on my borders. Either way, this is probably a bad idea, and I can only imagine that we're doing it to piss Russia off.

10. one question tho is this
Since I'm fairly sure i read that the US would not permit any inspections or whatnot of those facilities, how do we know the missiles in question might not be a lot more dangerous then claimed?

11. If no inspections are possible, then you have to take it on faith the fed. gov. is telling the truth
There is little faith in that institution nowadays.

13. There is even less faith in US government from the Russians
And "first strike" and "pre-emptive strike" are still in the vocabulary of the US Military Doctrine.
