Poverty spreading in suburbs: study
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Poverty in the United States is spreading from rural and inner-city areas to the suburbs, according to a study, a situation that can worsen as the economy confronts what may be a protracted recession.

<snip>

"Poverty is spreading and may be re-clustering in suburbs, where a majority of America's metropolitan poor now live."

The study was released ahead of next week's conference on concentrated poverty at the Fed. It shied away from explaining the causes of poverty, but past research have linked the phenomenon to loss of jobs in manufacturing, agriculture and mining.

With the U.S. economic outlook rapidly deteriorating, poverty could get worse.

The U.S. housing market collapse has unleashed the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, forcing business to scale back on investments and driving the unemployment rate to a 14-year high.

2. Bailouts and stimulus packages will mask this very real problem for a short time;...........
the problem meanwhile will increase many fold. Why the HELL doesn't ANYONE want to face the truth about foreign slave wage outsourcing and American job loss and its tremendous contribution to the destruction of our economy.

5. outsourcing and bailouts for billionaires
won't do SHIT.

We need to raise wages ,give more to those who have less.
So they will spend. And then things will improve. The greedy create the needy. The greedy billionaires spending bail out money on spas and renaming stadiums should be SHAMED and that money TAKEN BACK..
Greed by those Ceo PIGS who HAVE TOO MUCH should NOT be rewarded with MORE from those with less or nothing..
Fuck all the corporate exec pigs, let THEM feel the PINCHES..

7. You mean the 'exurbs', the land of McMansions and shopping centers?
They're already up to their eyeballs in debt. New foreclosure notices posted daily.

13. Flight into the cities
much like people in the Dark Ages stayed close to the walls of the cities in case of attack. Then came the plague.

14. Will your homeowners association allow chickens & cows?
Just saying, it would be hard to live on just what could be produced in a garden. No protein unless you grow beans but you wouldn't be able to grow enough to survive.

19. Sure it would fit but it would get awfully hungry!
You need at least three acres per cow to graze & hay for the winter.
