State: Touchscreen ballots don't have to be recounted

BRENDAN FARRINGTON

Associated Press

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Department of State has notified elections supervisors that touchscreen ballots don't have to be included during manual recounts because there is no question about how voters intended to vote.

While touchscreen ballot images can be printed, there is no need and elections supervisors aren't authorized to do so, Division of Elections Director Ed Kast wrote in a letter to Pasco County Supervisor of Elections Kurt Browning.

Florida law requires a manual recount of overvotes where too many candidates were chosen, and undervotes where no candidate was chosen in elections where the margin of victory is one-quarter of one percent of the vote.

But because the law states that the purpose of a recount is to determine whether there was a "clear indication on the ballot that the voter has made a definite choice," there is no need to review touchscreen ballots, Ed Kast, director of the Division of Elections.

2. The gall - to say this - given the unreliable end results (on these
machines) in a special election just a month or so ago.

3. I refuse to use public "touch screen" devices
.
.

Haven't we had it drilled into our heads (and I believe it) that one of the best way to prevent transmitting diseases is to wash our hands, especially after handling such things like money?

So how many people, especially in cold weather, cough, sniffle, wipe whatever, and then use touch screens, keyboards in public access computers and so on ?

If "we only knew" where those hands had been before they used that screen, keyboard, etc. just b4 we got there . . .

I know from using public washrooms that most do not wash their hands "after", I suspect men mostly ..

get my point?

If not

oh well !

4. If it scares you that much
use an unsharpened pencil or a small stick to actually touch the screen.

5. This is beyond corrupt.
After all the shit that happened there in 2000 and they haven't done one thing to correct it and indeed created a system that is even MORE riggable. Just more proof that they are intending a corporate theocracy, they are admitting now that only corporate votes count. I hope the nominee doesn't intend to spend much resources in Florida and that a class action suit is filed against the manufacturers and the officials.

7. You're right. The corruption in Florida has no bounds.
But I can tell you, that something is changing. The one thing that this Republicans can't live with is the loss of reputation. They'll only be corrupt if they think they can get away with it. All this pushing and shoving is beginning to crack their veneer. It hasn't made a real difference yet, but there's some signs that we're one big scandal away from major reform.

9. Doesn't the US send representatives around the world to
monitor elections in areas where there is a question of corruption, why not bombard the senate or the media or the florida legislator to have monitors at the polling stations and require that the machines be inspected on a random basis mainly in Florida and have these inspectors come from other countries? Maybe the "Clark Army" can get a group together to persue this issue with help from all who care.
