Two former Halliburton employees allege wasteful practices

LARRY MARGASAK

Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Highlighting their campaign against Vice President Dick Cheney's former company, Democratic lawmakers say two former Halliburton employees have evidence the company routinely wasted U.S. taxpayers' money. (snip)

Two of the most persistent Halliburton critics wrote Pentagon auditors on Thursday specifying the allegations of wasteful practices. Reps. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., and John Dingell, D-Mich., said 90 percent of the company's global support contract - worth $3.7 billion so far - is for work in Iraq. (snip)

According to Waxman and Dingell, Bunting and the unidentified whistleblower contend:

_Top Halliburton officials frequently told employees that high prices charged by vendors were not a problem because the U.S. government would reimburse the costs and then pay the company an additional fee.

TWO whistleblowers have come forward to expose Vice President Dick Cheney's old firm, Halliburton, for routinely overcharging US forces for goods and services.

The two men, who worked in procurement in Kuwait for the company, painted a picture of rampant profiteering at all levels.

They said a Halliburton motto was: 'Don't worry about price. It's cost plus'.

One of the men, a buyer called Henry Bunting, is due to address a Senate Democratic Policy Committee hearing today on alleged Iraq contracting abuses. The other, a procurement supervisor, is not named.

Two ex-workers claim contract overcharges

WASHINGTON -- Two former Halliburton Co. employees have accused the Houston company of routinely overcharging American taxpayers for work performed under a military contract.

Halliburton, which as a government contractor is supposed to keep a lid on costs, tried to order embroidered towels when ordinary ones would have cost a third as much and leased cars, trucks, SUVs and vans for up to $7,500 a month, the would-be whistle-blowers said.

The motto at Halliburton was "Don't worry about price. It's cost-plus," an unnamed former procurement supervisor told Democratic lawmakers.

A cost-plus contract is an agreement in which a subcontractor is reimbursed for the cost of providing a service and given an extra percentage as profit.
