Swimsuit issue placed out of reach
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/uniontrib/fri/news/news_1n13region.html

February 13, 2004

LOS ANGELES – Ralphs grocery stores moved editions of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue out of lower racks yesterday to keep them out of the hands and sight of children, a company spokesman said.

The chain moved the racy swimsuit edition higher up on shelves after a conservative youth organization called for nationwide boycotts against stores that continue to display sexually oriented magazines which can be easily seen by children.

A representative from Sports Illustrated couldn't be reached last night.

1. Ummm, I don't know if I disagree with that move
I think it's a good idea to keep sexually oriented mags away from the kids, and the SI swimsuit issue is indeed sexually oriented. Just because they're conservative doesn't mean they can't be right about a few things.

6. I'm not sure I disagree either.
Nothing against spank-mags, mind you, but I think it's silly for SI to pretend its swimsuit issue is anything but.

16. the trouble I have is
many conservatives are against the SI swimsuit issue but apparently stealing elections and illegally invading countries and killing thousands of people is just A-OK.

They might see some racy swimsuits there too!

That sexy billboard upon the hill
That sexy billboard gave me such a thrill
When I was just a little child
That sexy billboard drove me wild

5. Maybe the regime can amend the Patriot Act to ban swimsuits

at least on public beaches, to protect the children, who are already so traumatized from seeing Janet's bosom.

7. That's still going on?
I'm out here in da heartland, so I don't keep up, but I sure am surprised and disappointed to hear the strike's dragging on.

Ralphs, Vons and Albertsons - refresh my memory, but what major non-scab supermarkets does that leave you with in California?

10. Well, first, there's usually no pickets at Ralphs' ; the union
pulled them some time ago. And, yes, it is very frustrating. I think the union thought they were striking Vons, Pavilions, and Ralphs instead of Safeway and Kroger.

Major non-scab markets? Hmmm. Well, there's Statler Bros? Dunno if they're union or not; don't go to them myself. Mostly we go to Trader Joe's, and to a local Mexican chain called Farm Fresh, and to a coupla Asian groceries. Trader Joe is not union but by all accounts treat their employees well. The ethnic chains are not union either but not what I'd call scab, either, although they generally don't pay as well as the big outfits. Usually their employees are recent immigrants who feel like they're doing pretty well. Some of the big Korean markets in Korea Town have a number of hispanic employees stocking or running the butcher counter. These guys speak damn good Korean! Don't know where or how they learned it, but Korean is one tough language, and here're these guys, looking like your typical latino grocery worker guy, taking orders at the butcher counter, recommending fruits & veggies, even advising on how to cook stuff, in pretty darn good Korean. Coulda knocked me over with a feather! By the way, I'm an old Korea Peace Corps vol & my wife is a former Peace Corps language teacher - that's how I knew these guys were doing okay with the language.

14. Thanks.
Don't get out to CA much, so it's kind of a moot point, but I hope when I do, I'll be able to say with a clear conscience, in my best John Goodman voice, "f--- it, Dude, is there a Ralph's around here?!"

8. What about adult midgets, dwarves, short people etc. It hinders
easy access. Also some handicapped people.

This is an outrage!! :bounce:

11. The SI swimsuit issue is no more racy than Maxim, FHM,
and all the other "lads" magazines (that's what they call them in England, anyway). Those mags have practically naked women inside, and on the cover, every single month.

12. Yes, well, you also have "Page Three" there, too.
Which would make our blue-noses go ultra-violet with rage.

No argument, America is becoming the most sexually screwed-up nation on Earth...
