BUSH'S GUARD 'ACCUSER' ADMITS FAULTY MEMORY
Edited on Sun Feb-15-04 06:07 PM by demdave
February 15, 2004 -- Serious doubts have been raised about the stories of two key Alabama National Guard figures who questioned whether President Bush showed up for weekend duty there in the early 1970s.
Retired Brig. Gen. William Turnipseed, the 187th's Tactical Reconnaissance Group's former commander, recanted his statement that he couldn't remember if Bush reported for duty, now saying his memory is faulty because he's in the beginning stages of Alzheimer's disease.

-----------snip---------------

Turnipseed reversed gear after retired Lt. Col. John "Bill" Calhoun went public to say he remembered Bush well, and that in fact it was Turnipseed, then a colonel, who introduced Bush to him.

P.S.Sorry about the caps...that is how they headlined the story.

1. This story is over 4 years old and I'm assuming
he wasn't in the beginning of Alzheimer's at that time. I don't believe his memory is any more faulty than bush - probably much better - the poor man probably doesn't know what to do.

6. Guys in sunglasses are making a lot of visits these days...
reminding people who never saw Bush in Alabama in 1772 that life is too short to miss seeing Bush in Alabama in 1972, so if they haven't already seen Bush in Alabama in 1972, they'd better do so while there's still time.

To his "sudden" loss of memory.

I just got off the phone about an hour ago with Brig. Gen. William R. Turnipseed. He is the sole source for the four year old story that Bush was AWOL during his National Guard service.

Mr. Turnipseed is very unhappy with the way what he said "casually" four years ago has been twisted by the "Bush haters" (his words) in the media, especially the Boston Globe (who first reported the story) and the New York Times.

(snip)

He said that when he first spoke to the Boston Globe reporter about this four years ago he didn't realize he was talking to a "Bush hater."

Turnipseed is a strong Bush supporter. He said that he has been contacted many times especially recently, by "Bush haters" in the media, who try to get him to say that Bush was AWOL. Once they realize that he won't cooperate they lose interest in talking to him. When they do quote him, they say he is backpedaling--even though he is still saying the same exact thing he told them four years ago.

14. What difference does it make if it is a bush hater or an idiot?
Why would he say that he never saw bush to a bush lover.

Is he saying that if he knew it was a bush hater that he would lie by saying that bush was there??? Makes a lot of sense. NOT

28. Yet he remembers the context of the conversation
four years ago (before the onset of his Alzheimers?) with a Boston Globe reporter? That it was "casual" and he didn't know he was talking to a "Bush Hater"?

Curiouser and curiouser....

12. Weird Factoids About Turnipseed
The White House told Salon Magazine that Turnipseed contributed $500 to the Edwards campaign. OpenSecrets.org lists a Will Turnipseed from Montgomery AL as a $500 donor to Edwards. Turnipseed now says he is a Bush supporter. Is something funny going on here?

18. I checked the Montgomery Polk Directories last week...
and there was at least one other William Turnipseed.

Only one of them was listed with the USAF. He was listed as Wm R Turnipseed Jr.

This Will Turnipseed does not show an occupation filed with the FEC.

...the dentist claims he never worked on Junior, Calhoun is talking about a period of time BEFORE Junior supposedly was transferred to the Alabama National Guard, and the two most senior officers at that time in Alabama recall nothing about the man.

23. No. Jessica's only "memory problem" is when she was unconscious for...
...for a short period of time. Everything she has said to the press has been consistently truthful...even to the point of refuting some of the garbage her so-called book author had dumped into her autobiography.

Does anybody know if Gen Turnipseed was related to Tom Turnipseed (Gov George Wallace's aid and Campaign Manager) ?

Wasn't Winton "Red" Blount somewhat of a segregationist and has anybody asked the president why he volunteered to go to AL and work on a segregationists campaign ?
