Greece to give Olympians armed escorts
The Greek government has announced that athletes at this year's Athens Olympics will be accompanied by armed troops.

Announcing the measure, the Greek Public Order Ministry said competitors from what it described as high risk countries will be guarded as they travel from the Olympic village on the outskirts of Athens to sports venues.

1. Greek police....
Ever see Greek police? I've never seen plain police officers in full combat gear before. Helmets, body armor, automatic weapons, everything. This is nothing new for Greece. It's been like that since the 1970s.

2. Any reasons why?
I visited Athens last summer and noticed a lot of cops forming brigades and marching in full our armor etc.

Any reasons for such intense police enforcement. It was quite scary, but the city didn't seem unsafe.

3. We don't need another Munich '72.
and Lord knows there are a multitude of reasons Athens will be a "high profile" target.
Prayers for the athletes.....

4. Imperialism does not enjoy the same popularity globally as it does

among the US affluent classes.
