Greenspan: Make Bush Tax Cuts Permanent
Excerpts:

WASHINGTON - Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said Thursday that Congress should make President Bush's tax cuts permanent and cover the $1 trillion price by trimming future benefits in Social Security and other entitlement programs.

Greenspan told the Senate Banking Committee that Congress, "as a first order of business," should restore budget rules that cap discretionary government spending and require increases in entitlement benefits or cuts in taxes to be offset by other program cuts or other tax increases.

Greenspan was asked how he would come up with the decade-long cost of $1 trillion to pay for extending the 2001 and 2003 individual tax cuts. "I would argue strenuously that it should be taken out on the expenditure side," he answered.

Well, we know where the Fed stands, anyway.

6. You can say that again.

By all means cut the meager sustenance benefits of the disabled and the elderly so the uberwealthy can be further enriched. Wow what genius! Steal from the poor to give to the rich! Wow what revolutionary thinking! Reverse Robin Hoodism masquerading as sage "Economic Policy!" Put yourself down for the Nobel Prize in Economics. {sarcasm off} Very "compassionately conservative" of a policy there Alan, but then again real compassion was never your strong suit. This a sick, plutocratic recipe for accelerated societal disintegration. Clearly he has lost whatever credibilty he had, however he now has provided irrefutable evidence that Junior's real agenda is that of Grover Norquist which is to starve government and drown it in a bathtub. The objective of these miscreants, plain for all to see, is to rebuild the caste chasm which existed in the gilded age and entrench it permanently.

3. So, essentially...

Steal from the old, the infirm and the poor and give it to the wealthiest 1% of Americans.

Brilliant!

Greenspan is just trying to find a way to twist out from under the deficits he has encouraged.

On edit -- Why wait for the future, Alan? Let's recommend trimming Social Security and entitlement programs RIGHT NOW! Take money away from people getting Social Security RIGHT NOW! That would solve the problem quicker, wouldn't it?

Make my day.

5. This is so stupid.
Permanent tax cuts are like lock boxes for social security. They're only permanent until someone decides to make them un-permanent.

11. fiscal responsibility
if you are going to take in less revenue then you should spend less. I'm not sure why everyone is freaking out about Greenspan saying this. Tax cuts do put more money in the hands of the consumers which is (apparently arguable) that that is where it should be. He isn't giving Bush a free pass, he's still stressing that the deficit is a bad thing (very bad thing).

12. Hello?
Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 02:40 PM by htuttle
He's suggesting that we slash Social Security, which is NOT running a deficit on it's own, so that we can pay for these ridiculous tax cuts that benefit noone but the rich.

THAT IS NOT FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY.
THAT IS CALLED BEING A BAGMAN FOR THE ELITE.

By the way, do you realize how many of Rove's talking points you worked into that one answer?

13. Greenspan's Pissed and Senile
Well, Reagan ran the country with Alzheimer's, so it's not beyond belief that Greenspan is doing the same with the Fed.

Al's in deep, deep doo-doo. He had the chance to go out like a hero in the late 90's, being the Chairman that gave the Masses the market, but instead he stayed on board for the long ride toward the Bottom.

Now he's pissed. He's pissed and senile and he's going to grasp at any straw he can to try to salvage some of his reputation for posterity's sake.

14. To Alan Greenspan...the U.S. Dollar is our Messiah.
If we sellout the Messiah, we will not survive to enjoy such profits. If we crucify the Messiah, we shall see the Messiah rise again! And for any miracle to become reality, all we need is faith my children.

With low interest rates and low taxes..all things are possible, Luke 1:37
