Two Judges Delay Gay Marriage Rulings -- Marriages To Continue
Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 10:33 PM by Cannikin
(San Francisco, California) Two San Francisco judges Tuesday delayed hearings on applications by conservative political action groups to stop the city from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Judge James L. Warren cited procedural problems with legal papers submitted by the Proposition 22 Legal Defense and Education Fund.

The issue for Warren was a semicolon.

But, Warren had some bad news for same-sex partners. He said he'd read the various briefs submitted to him, and had done his own research and believes that the conservative groups appear entitled to get their stay eventually.

1. Good for the Judges
Hopefully, as many as possible will get married before they may have to grant a stay!

2. The City Continues to Cash In Too .....
Edited on Tue Feb-17-04 10:42 PM by patmacsf
Ok, being gay and being from San Francisco, this is going to sound like heresy, but here goes. How come the S.F. City Clerk's web site still lists the following criteria for a marriage certificate in this city ( http://www.ci.sf.ca.us/site/countyclerk_page.asp?id=5565):

You do not need to be a California resident to marry in California.
The same requirements apply whether you are a U.S. Citizen or a Tourist.

Only an unmarried male and an unmarried female may marry in California.

Marriage by proxy is not allowed in California.

Seems pretty simple. Three simple rules. Too bad the city can't be bothered to update their own web site while they're cashing in at approximately $140 per couple for a license and a civil ceremony. At this rate, it would appear that the city, which has been suffering massive deficits like most other American cities, has pulled in a neat $350,000.00 in the last four days from some pretty gullible gay couples. Makes sense that the city doesn't want to spend the $20 to update their web site since they're expecting it to be correct after a judge finally rules anyway.
