Volcanoes Erupt in Japan and Russia, Spreading Ash (Update2)
Edited on Mon Feb-02-09 09:41 AM by Coventina
Source: Bloomberg

Feb. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Two volcanoes in Japan and another in eastern Russia erupted overnight, spreading ash as far as the Philippines and Vietnam, the Japan Meteorological Agency said on its Web site.

Seven minor eruptions occurred at Mount Sakurajima on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu, throwing rocks up to 2 kilometers, the agency said. Eruptions at Mount Asama in central Japan and Karymsky Volcano on the Russian peninsula of Kamchatka were also reported. There were no reports of damage or injuries.

“I woke up after midnight to the sound and shake of the eruption,” Daisuke Tanaka, 24, a convenience-store attendant, who lives about 20 kilometers away from Asama, said by telephone today. “The sound was as if an airplane was taking off nearby and it continued for 30 minutes.”

The eruptions occurred in a region where four tectonic plates, the Eurasian, Philippine, North American and Pacific, meet, causing seismic activity.

10. If it slows or stops Global Warming, it will also decrease the growing season & make more acid rain
I think.

I'm not certain about that.

Anyone?

12. A huge explosion like Krakatoa would cause cooling.
It would only be temporary, though. The ash would settle after a couple years.

19. Mt. Pinatubo gave us an unusually cool summer in 1991
But that was about it. A very large volcano may give a few years of below-normal temperatures, but once the dust settles the temps will go back up again because the underlying cause of global warming (excess CO2) would still be there.

14. The scientific explanation is much more interesting,
but it requires more time and effort to understand:

6. Yeah, but Sakurajima is pretty much always erupting . . .
Not to the point of tossing rocks a mile or so, but if you've even been to Kagoshima, the steam/ash cloud hangs over the mountain pretty much all the time.

7. 5.9 QUAKE NEAR MT. REDOUBT AREA

Good news! The Alaska volcano website has been boosted! So we get all the information there, at last. Too many of us piled in there on Friday, crashing the system. The picture above is from their webcam of this particular volcano, Redoubt. It doesn’t look too active, does it? But then, these volcanoes in particular, are known for blowing up rather suddenly, with a loud bang. The earthquake activity was sufficient to show up on the global maps run by IRIS Geological Survey people. Also, I went to Chile to visit the Chaiten volcano. It is still pouring out massive amounts of dirt into the stratosphere which is why the sun is dim, the stars barely shine and a fine, very thin but significant white veil covers the planet, making it colder and wetter. Kentucky is the latest victim of vicious ice storms.

First, I looked at the IRIS world map to see what is going on. The Aleutian Island volcanic chain is being rattled by a series of fairly large earthquakes including one big shaker of 4.9 right where the awakening volcano is located. Since the web page run by the State of Alaska is up, I decided to get lots of great information from it and was pleased to see, it is a very deep, well run and informative web site well worth visiting.

15. We all need a volcanic bailout!
If we have to vacate the premises ... for the moon or something ... we all need a stimulus/bailout.
