BREAKING: New CBO report debunks GOP stimulus talking points
by Drdemocrat
Mon Feb 02, 2009 at 02:05:18 PM PST

The CBO just came out with a report about the Senate Stimulus plan and it shows that 78% of the $884 billion will be spent during the first 18 months.

http://cbo.gov/

The Obama administration vowed that they wanted at least 75% of the money spent from a stimulus package should be spent within the first 18 months.

The House version of the bill was found by the CBO to spend out 64% of the money in the first 18 months. As a result, GOP put out the talking point that not enough of the stimulus package would be spent quickly enough.

Now the CBO has looked at the Senate version and they have found that $694 billion of the $884 billion will be spent out in the first 18 months after it is enacted. This results in 78% of the money being spent which is better than House version of the bill.

The Senate version isn't the House version and neither is the final product. This is a invented kerfuffle. Let's see what the final product will be. So far both have ear marks which Obama said he would (not) allow.

31. True. But Repub talking points and MSMS are acting as if the bill is final so
it's a good thing the CBO has debunked a well-publicized right-wing talking point they regurgitate over and over again with very helpful broadcast and cable "news" networks. It's high time their lies are taken down HARD before they have time to ferment in the people's minds - something they were close to doing.

being a recalcitrant media propagandist and that won't sit well with him and the execs.

That's said, I'm glad she brought it up. Will the rest of the "liberal" media follow? I doubt it.

32. Of course not. They were happy as could be they were succeeding in twisting
the message, calling it a "stimulus package" rather than the recovery and reinvestment bill that it is.

They were gleefully saying that it's clear the repukes were winning the words war over the President and Democrats - of course NOT acknowledging how helpful they all were in dragging every friggin repuke out from under every stone to a microphone and camera to make their case.

And what's with C-Span using Politico as a respectable news source these days??

The Democrats have a majority of voters, who don't do anything other than vote and watch tv. That does not a majority make, when the perception managers own the tv.

14. You mean the repubisrushicans LIED???
You don't say?:eyes:
I am reminded of the parable of the snake crossing the river.

Mr. Snake approaches Mr. Turtle on a river bank and asks Mr. Turtle for a ride across the water since he can’t swim the river himself. Mr. Turtle politely refuses to oblige, reasoning that if he were to give Mr. Snake a ride across the river, he would surely be bitten. Mr. Snake protests saying that it would be foolish for him to bite the one carrying him, since it would result in him perishing also. Mr. Turtle considers the argument, then agrees to ferry Mr. Snake over the broad river. When they are half-way across the river Mr. Turtle feels a sharp pain and realizes he has been bitten by Mr. Snake. As the venom is beginning to take effect, Mr. Turtle sadly and resolutely asks Mr. Snake why he bit him, since the biting will also result in Mr. Snake’s demise. A wry smile came upon Mr. Snake’s face. “I bit you because I am a snake Mr. Turtle; that is what snakes do.”

republicans lie. It is what they do. To even be surprised is silly.:(

29. A fabulous, instructive fable/parable I first read...

many, many years ago in a Playboy Magazine interview with Dustin Hoffman. The way Dustin told the story the turtle makes it to the other side of the raging river with a mighty effort required by the dead weight riding on his shell. As the snake slithers off, it turns and then bites the turtle on the neck, then the typical snake replys to the "why" question, "Hey, you knew I was a snake!"

Pithy advice to pay extra special attention to, and I have for about 40 years since I read it for the first time.

Shrub was attempting to make a similar point when he made his famously inept, "fool me once, fool me twice, etc" quip.

36. Please be careful
This implies that Democrats do not lie, and we know that is not a true statement. Granted, there is a matter of degree. Additionally, if the Republicans were attacking the house plan, then when they said it didn't meet Obama's goals, they were right.....

48. Why not?
The Repugs are the ones who sang the song of deregulation for years - it was their mantra. Enron showed the world the danger, but the Repugs spun and distracted and very little was done to control the devious and ultra greedy corpratists (sp?). Yes, some Dems (DINO's?) played along with the schemes, but the schemers, the ones who brought this about, were by and large Repug: so I can and will blame them all day long and feel justified.

when they are brought up on charges they deserve (Palin, for example)-- Partisan attacks from Democrats (even when the panel is split).

Why don't the Dems scream about partisan attacks putting party before country and human life and all of that? Oh, right...they do but nobody puts it on the tee vee.

After what they announced re Iraq and Betrayus wanting to blame the failure on Obama, I'm all outta patience for these thugs.

30. MoveOn.org is taking pledges now to buy ads...
I believe that if MoveOn can generate huge numbers during this "pledge drive" those "Blue Dog" Demos, and some key, vulnerable Republicans can be "made" to vote "yes" for the "stimulus bill", as their constituents would prefer that they do.
Please consider this effort yourself and join millions doing something!
_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Dear MoveOn member,
This week, the Senate will vote on President Obama's economic stimulus plan—with historic investments in green jobs, health care, and education to get our economy back on track.

But right now, the stimulus doesn't have the votes to pass.1 Republicans and conservative Democrats are teaming up to strip out the good stuff—college loan assistance, health research, tax cuts for poor folks, and more—in favor of more tax cuts for corporations.2 If they don't get their way, they'll block the plan.

Last week, not a single Republican in the House voted for Obama's plan—they didn't think voters would ever hold them accountable. That's why we're asking folks to pledge now to help run ads after the vote letting the public know where key senators—both Republican and Democrat—came down on the bill. We need to get started now, so politicians and the media know their constituents are paying attention.

Can you pledge now to make sure senators know that voters will hold them accountable for their vote? You won't need your credit card—just let us know how much you'd like to pledge:
***************************************************************************************************
The Senate is getting ready to vote on President Obama's stimulus, but right now the plan doesn't have enough votes to pass. Senators need to know voters will hold them accountable for this vote. Can you pledge now to help run ads after the vote letting the public know how key senators voted?

Pledging today to run ads about how senators vote could change the outcome in the Senate. Click here to make your pledge:

45. What is the big difference between House and Senate versions?
Tax cuts I hope. Those GOP tax giveaways do almost nothing for the economy. They saddle us with deficits, but unlike the infrastructure investments, the tax cuts leave the country with nothing to show for it.

At least if we run a deficit, let's get some bridges repaired for our money.
