Air traffic tapes of Hudson plane crash released
Source: CNN

The story

Minutes after he reported hitting birds and losing power in both engines, the pilot of US Airways Flight 1549 calmly told an air traffic controller the plane would ditch into the Hudson River.

"We can't do it," pilot Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger said at 3:29 p.m. on January 15, in response to efforts to land the plane at New Jersey's Teterboro airport, according to a recording released Thursday by the Federal Aviation Administration.

"We're gonna be in the Hudson," Sullenberger said, about three and a half minutes after the Airbus A320 took off from New York's LaGuardia Airport.

"I'm sorry, say again," said the controller, from New York Tracon, a radar facility on Long Island that handles flights after they depart from LaGuardia or Teterboro airports.. Listen to the pilot talk to the controllers

There is no response

1. Calm and competent.
I would trust any of those men-pilot, copilot, controllers-with my life.

4. me, too
You, me and 153 others just did. I suspect about 300 million more would do the same.

I get emotional just thinking about it. From now own, when others mention heroes, I will stand and say two words - Captain Sullenberger.

2. Everyone's level-headedness is what amazes me
I mean, these controllers have planes all over the place. One plane is in trouble, and suddenly it's as if there are no other planes in the air or on any runways. Everything is cleared for Sullenberger with just a few words between controllers.

5. I was a police, fire, rescue dispatcher in W. PA the night all those tornadoes touched down in the
eighties. Your training keeps you calm though it all but once you are off the clock, your humaness kicks in.

3. The controller's "say again" indicates he can't believe what he heard. It took another liner, to
report "I think he said he's goin' in the Hudson." Unreal -- the speed with which the Teeterboro controller gave LaGuardia clearance to have the plane land, the quick thinking controller at La Guardia offering different options. And then there's the flight crew -- amazing.

7. No government involvement in this one ...
... thus no need to hide/distract/whitewash/block anything,
just apply the usual procedures.

8. Frankly, it's because no one died. The investigation goes much more smoothly when no one dies.
