Calif. octuplets' mom's veil of secrecy vanishes
Edited on Thu Feb-05-09 11:23 PM by WorseBeforeBetter
Source: Associated Press

Suleman, who now has 14 children, told doctors she battled with depression for years after she was injured in a riot in 1999 at the state mental hospital where she worked.

~~~~
Among other things, the documents reveal that Suleman collected more than $165,000 in disability payments between 2002 and 2008 for an injury she said left her in near-constant pain and helped end her marriage.
~~~~

"That was always a dream of mine, to have a large family, a huge family," she said. "I just longed for certain connections and attachments with another person that ... I really lacked, I believe, growing up."

In the state report, however, doctors indicate she had a happy childhood. She told them she was an above-average high school student, enjoyed being a cheerleader, had many friends and stayed out of trouble. She said her parents were loving and supportive.

1. "state mental hospital where she worked"
are we to believe she only "worked" there, after the other revelations?

2. The plot thickens.
Another thing that baffles me about this entire case is how someone can handle the physical demands of raising 14 children while living in near-constant pain. I can only imagine what sort of Rx's she may be on.

38. forget raising them -- how did she survive the pregnancy?
My OB specialized in multiples. One day I happened to walk past a room where a young mom was lying on a table, in very OBVIOUS pain. She was carrying THREE. The Doctor was trying to keep from having to do a c-section too early - she was at 30 weeks. She looked (quite frankly) like a corpse, with a swollen WRITHING belly. My heart so went out to her.

So, if Ms. *I was Injured* was in so much pain it broke up her marriage -- HOW could she withstand the pregnancy and WHAT sort of doctor, knowing her injury history - would implant multiples?

This whole story stinks to high heaven. And it only gets smellier with these *oh poor little sad Mommy* stories, delivered up with just the right amount of schmaltz by the PR people.

40. "worked" well, she collected disability for 8 years from a "back injury"
so worked is probably overstating it a bit. Amazing how you can be too ill to work, yet you can go thru invitro and give birth repeatedly, raise 6 children born in quick succession, and attend college, all at the same time.

Many times people who have issues are drawn to the mental health field because of their own research into their problems. God help the world that 14 children will be raised by that person.

62. I worked at Atascadero State Hosp. doing "alternative service" in early 1967...

as a "Conscientious Objector". A maximum security institution warehousing many of the most bizarre, criminal, and sexually twisted Californians.

The staff often commented that "if they couldn't commit you, they hired you".

I was young (20 y.o.) and somewhat naive but I tended to agree! The typical "Psychiatric Technician Trainee" back then, and there, was an under-educated local yahoo. The only education requirement was successful completion of the 8th grade, I kid you not!

After a month working there, Ronald Reagan was inaugurated as CA governor, and among his first programs was to drastically/radically reduce the "mental" hospital program, and I was quickly looking for another place to continue my alternative service obligation.

15. $27,500 a year in disability
ain't enough to raise ONE child on, never mind 6.

My thought here is if she gets tons of negative press that she cannot handle, the babies will be off to foster care. Maybe all 14 if her folks can't deal with all the press. Even if she gets a sympathetic outpouring, how traumatic for the original 6 kids to watch a parade of infants coming, whether into Granny and Gramps' house or the McMansion some outfit will build for her. It's really hard to see a positive outcome here.

I am really finding the next words out of my keyboard very very strange, but I find myself sticking up for the Duggars, to say at least they can afford to have all their kids as real estate brokers, and at least the kids are spaced out to some extent. This woman is just absolutely looneytoons.

I really have to wonder how the fuck she is going to raise them all. She really spit out a litter, not 8 infants.

37. I'm kind of neutral on Oprah (meaning I don't get the appeal...),
but I'm wondering if these births will be celebrated (rah rah!), or if Oprah will do the responsible thing and "attack" it from all angles, with ethics leading the charge. Fourteen kids without a significant other to help financially or with child-rearing is another biggie. Assuming one's not-quite-elderly parents will step up is another (evidently Dad is going back to his native Eye-raq as a contractor/truck driver). Etc.

39. Gosh.. amazing how that back injury didn't keep her from popping out 6 kids.
The State of California should sue her for disability fraud! $165,000.00 paid to her while she was "unable to work" from a back injury suffered on her job at the mental health services. So she lives at home, pockets the dough and spends it on expensive in vitro and giving birth to 6 kids, and now 14.

Guess we finally understand why she told that girl at school (because her back injury that kept her out of work and paid by the State for 8 years didn't stop her from going to college) that she was "being paid" to have all those kids and go to school.

Shows how utterly sick our media society is... this woman, who should never be a parent, let alone a parent of 14 children, is being offered millions for her story. Yeah, let's celebrate a cheat, and someone who is too mentally unstable to have all these kids. The doctors involved in her invitro should face some type of reprimand as well. And her sperm donor friend should be paying the State back as well. I feel sorry for the others in her insurance group, because their premiums go up as a result of her mental issues.

56. Can you only imagine the complete travesty it will be
if in 1-2 years time we hear this woman is yet again pregnant with a mulitple birth??? :scared:

I don't how anyone or entity could force her to get her tubes tied. That would be a slippery slope for the general population.

But someone has got to get up in her face and explain to her the ramifications of what she has done and the dangers that another pregnancy could pose to the welfare of her 14 kids.

It is frightening to me that there is absolutely nothing anyone can definitively do right now to prevent a repeat performance from this very unstable woman.

63. I don't think the doctor has been identified yet.
But you would think that history of depression + living in "near-constant pain" + no job + no significant other to help + 6 kids already + living on disability would set off some alarm bells.

Hell, I had to have a credit check plus home visit to adopt a cat from the local shelter.
